Forums - Gaming - Rage Developer:Rage will look worse on 360 due to compression

Hahaha, sounds like you guys have no idea who John Carmack is. He is very close to Microsoft and was even consulted by Microsoft on various issues with the original Xbox.

The people quoting him out of context (Sony fanboys) are idiots. He is not saying that it will have poorer graphics PERIOD. He's saying that if concessions aren't made (i.e. the royalties on the third disc dropped) then he will have to lower the quality to fit it onto two discs.

THIS WILL NEVER EVER HAPPEN. He's just using this as an opportunity to maneuver himself so as to back Microsoft into a corner and basically waive the extra royalties.

Microsoft will either budge or force him to use better compression, but I can guarantee you that the quality will not be dropped. Not by the man who loves Microsoft.

no matter how anyone spins this ,it just shows that blu-ray is infact needed going forward.Despite lots of poeple bashing it for not being  neccessary.imagine 3more years from now,,,Size of games will be huge ,therfore making  bluray a very good medium choice for future.

The future is Blu guys  ;) lol

I don't think that it will really do anything for the PS3, they'll use the same textures that fit onto a DVD9 for both versions. If developers are so keen to bring the PS3 version up to parity with the Xbox360, I doubt they will do anything that will makes the PS3 versions noticeably better. It goes both ways... ya?

Edit * For games that use this engine, not this game of course... As its a tech demo essentially*

Tease.

Royalty fees to make a game 3 discs?

Um, no?

To be quite honest, I don't know a single developer who would come out and say that. I label this article fake.

I agree with you, Shadowblind.  I've never heard of royalties being paid by disc.  This article smells fishy.

I thought the price of "royalties" per disc was already included into the price because the disc manufacturer pays them.  3 DVDs would be cheaper than one BRD

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

Haha, royalty has nothing to do with manufacturing cost. DVDs are dirt cheap nowadays. By royalty they mean Microsoft getting an extra cut for each game. I'm guessing they did this so that devs would be forced to compress games instead of having every game under the sun more than 1 disc.

I am pretty sure he's not talking about 360 royalties...  Oh, I see, he's trying to get MS to flip the bill... Smart guy.

So what's rage about anyway.

Yeah... this is the first time i've even heard of this game... and i'd like to think i'm pretty well informed.

And the downplaying has begun.

Nobody was making noise about this game before this tread came along.

Actully when first shown PS3 haters were using it to show that you dont need PS3 superior hardweare to make great graphics, saying that 360 could run it thus it can do what PS3 can.

It was first used as a way to down play PS3s hardware.

Funny how time changes things.

Actually, Carmack explicitly bashed the PS3 architecture several times today at QuakeCon. How's that for ya?

A PS3 hater forced to say PS3 version of his game is superior.

i might cry lol, its freaking priceless.

yes ,,he said this so the forums would explode (like this lol )so MS would allow them to put it on 3 disks.

Well as far as I know Carmack is pushing new tech with this engine (Called megatexture), with the purpose of making more realistics enviroments, probably thats why he said it (Two dvds with tons of huge textures is not wnough for him), the interesting part will be how big is the difference...

"The demonstration with which the new game engine was shown had 20 GB of texture data (using a more advanced MegaTexture approach using textures with up to 128000x128000 pixel resolution) and a completely dynamically changeable world."

Edit: Some people need to understand that this case in particular is due to the Tech of the new engine, and this is only the wet dream of Carmack, he want to put the Tech5 as a new and competitive engine (Like UTE or CryEngine2), so far this is the only game using it, and probably there is not going to be many of them... like Tech4 (Doom4,Quake4 and Prey)... is a hit to the 360 yes, but is not a big hit...

apearently Doom4 (just announced)will be on the same engine as rage with modification to improve the graphics will lowering the FPS from 60 to 30.

Does that eman that doom 4 also will be on 2 disks on 360?

So, two games from IDSoftware??? on more than one DVD??? really I can´t how this is a big hit for the 360
