Of course when you're down 50 million units, you can't exactly resort to the old ways of bribing people. That only works when you're ahead by 5 million. |
This makes no sense.
Were devs having a hard time choosing between making new games on the PS2 that has 120m+ vs the 360 in 2005/6? No, when a new gen starts, it starts. New bigger games are pushed to the new machines.
Also, at the time a new Xbox is release, PS4 will either be out or heavily talked about, just like the PS3 when 360 released. Sony is not going to let MS have too much of a head start this time.

The PS2 wasn't HD. The PS3 is and already has BD games, a big step MS still has to make. Plenty of space for devs to push PS3 games once MS finally catches up and comes out with a console with BD games, WiFi and everything else that's already standard on PS3.
Also PS3 has first party games. MS needs to bribe 3rd parties for games. PS3 will be $249 by the time the new XBox comes out which will be costing a lot more and finally offer BD and WiFi, something the less pricy PS3 comes with and also be behind by 50-60 million consoles.

You're missing the point. Once the next gen kicks off you have a huge buzz. The other systems, regardless of their tech, are automatically considered inferior by media and the mass in general.
The BD is a very minor issue, the neXtBox will surely have BD or equivalent and probably wifi sure, but it will also have a jump in a lot of other areas that will far surpass what PS3 or 360 currently offers.
On top of that, by the time neXtBox releases, Sony will be ready to have PS4 launch. Hell it will probably launch at the same time frame. Example, PS launched in 1994, PS2 in 2000, PS3 in 2006...see a pattern here? 2012 will be PS4. If Xbox is planning on 2011, Sony may already be preparing for that and trying to have a PS4 ready for 2011.
Then, as always, the game devs won't put much on the 'losing' systems from last gen. Only the 'winner' gets new games from 3rd parties once the next gen has started. How many games did xbox or gamecube get from anyone after mid 2006?
When neXtBox and PS4 launch in 2011/12, PS3 will be on its way out, similar to the Gamecube when PS3 and Wii launched. It won't have a 10yr life regardless of what Sony says if it isn't in a comfortable 1st place.
