Online services are not free to provide. Sony loss leads with its online plan in the same way they loss lead with their hardware. What Sony is basically doing is undercutting market costs. They use their savings to buy things that they sell for less then the price they purchased them for. For most markets this would be illegal, but in the gaming market dirty tactics seem to be quite acceptable. Microsoft instead of providing a poor quality free online service has instead opted to use its bank to purchase high quality exclusive entertainment.
To me it really is not much of a choice. On one hand you have a free online service. Then on the other you have one that costs all of a few dollars a month. However with that you get all the best games, a lot of free content, and a lot of options. My cost benefit analysis tells me that three dollars a month is good value. Even if I just use the system to bypass a long distance call once a month.
I agree with others it is the diversity of the market. Over a dozen languages, hundreds of trade laws, cultural differences, and a modest market for product can only do one thing. They all thwart a comprehensive service.
