not surprised, 360 has awfull build quality.
Just for information ,the broken consoles in my country (Spain ) are sent to Germany not to Uk .

I hope MS realizes the bad press they are getting from these random stories about massive returns. MS has the cash, and sence to realize that this is hurting their bottomline. Hopefully they fix this for good in the next few weeks, or else they'll never make money due to too high return rates. |
They're not random -- they're an epidemic.
I suspect Microsoft isn't addressing this problem properly for a few reasons. First, any way to really address this problem would require admitting there is a problem in the first place. They'd have to come out and say, "hey, these units sucked, here are more refunds for your repairs. We promise the new ones don't suck." However, you'd have to count on them being honest this time, when they already did that and obviously weren't.
Secondly, it would cost a lot of money. Microsoft is struggling to generate a profit outside of their windows/office divisions. They haven't had more than a successful quarter or two here or there yet anywhere outside of office/windows. They told investors that the Xbox brand was going to be successful in the second generation and it's far, far from it.
Third, they need to have a solid fix in place and start shipping the fixed units first. Since it takes a while to diagnose failures, it's hard to do this. Further, they're currently pumping out tons of these units monthly so they can sell them -- this means they need to find a fix they can put into their production lines and they also have the problem of shelf inventory right now.
It's a very, very difficult problem to address. Simply put, it would have been a ton easier to fix this before they launched, and it's something that should have been addressed before launch. Given the insurmountablility of the problem now, Microsoft elected to pretend the problem isn't there for PR reasons and is probably scrambling behind the scenes to find a fix or possibly a new manufacturing partner.

Actually it was a 360 owner who claimed that the center told him these numbers. That doesn't mean that they are wrong, it just means that those numbers are not offical and need to be taken with a grain of salt. Still, even if the low end number is correct (1,500) that is still alot of consoles per day. Assuming an average of 2,000 consoles per day ((1500+2500)/2 = 2000) and 5 workdays. (I assume they don't work weekends) That is 10,000 consoles per week. How many 360's does microsoft sell in the UK per week? |
Yeah, there's no official source in that news article, meaning take anything it says with a grain of salt.
Assuming those numbers were true, that would go with the 20% failure rate (2000/day is right around 22% for Europe) but I don't even trust the 20% rate figure, since, once again it comes from people just talking and it a complete guess.

(1) Again: This isn't attach rate. The failure rate isn't connected to the daily sales. Failure is measured in different ways, and units that get fixed can eventually be counted as a non-failure.
(2) This isn't for Europe, this is for the UK. The number of failures is either close to the sales rate in the UK or it is greater than the sales rate in the UK -- depending on whether you include Saturdays (i'd bet you would in that country).

Yeah, I just made the thread topic the same name as the article. I didn't intend to suggest that 2500 consoles a day get sent to this center. I mean, I haven't had the greatest luck with the 360 but I don't know that I can believe 2500 a day for one area. And like someone said earlier, this number surely includes consoles that are sent in more than once. I am sure these numbers include retailer returns as well. I doubt defective consoles that are returned to a Bestbuy for instance don't end up at these centers.
I for one am anticipating the new consoles with the new chips and drives. We will probably upgrade at least two of our consoles to elites once they come out, assuming they are more reliable. I've never personally had the three rings or overheating issues that seem to be what most people complain about. Mine have always had DRE's or some other wierd drive problems like trying to read games as movies.
Again, everyone is blowing it out of proportion. Its not "OMGZ, 2500 a day steady!" It seems it changes in between 1500~2500, which is a huge difference.
I feel a few bans coming on. URNotE is trolling this board, and he's getting too close to becoming just a MS troll.
Lets try to discuss this issue intelligently rather than flame, sound fair? Or else this, and any other thread like this is getting locked, and those that post more flamebait, banned. Im seeing more and more rashes of anti system X Y and Z than we had for quite some time, and I think the banhammer needs to start to crash down on a few accounts.
Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
The thing of it is that after MS improves the 360's, it might have a large jump in sales, since consumers won't have to deal with the worry of broken down 360s anymore.
They might see sales of 10 thousand more weekly, just from this alone.

Thank you for your interest in my post. I guess I should have included a disclaimer "I didn't write the article". Hell, the number seems exagerated to me. The part I'm most interested in is that they are waiting for MS to respond. I expect MS to outright deny the numbers but we'll probably get a non-answer, answer. I posted it as a topic of discussion which is what I thought forums were for. Maybe I'm wrong? To answer your questions: I am going to post it twice, which I did. I'm not worried about everyone not seeing it. I posted it in the other thread then thought to myself "this actually probably belongs in a new thread". I'll edit my post in the other thread and delete the link if that will help you sleep better at night. Why would I sell my 360's? I like them. I use them everyday. I don't like the defect rate. If that makes me a 360 hater or PS3 lover then so be it. I don't recall mentioning my love for the PS3 in either of the threads your refering to. You seem a little defensive, why is that? You seem like a total asshole to me...maybe my posts aren't the ones that are being eyerolled.

Well replied
Anyway, the fact that Microsoft isn't giving any real figures is a sign of a problem anyway, because if there's not a problem they'd be "Oh yeah, well that's just a few random problems, we've done an internal investigation, and only about 100 consoles are returned each month in the UK" or something along those lines.
One person's experience or opinion never shows the general consensus
