Forums - Sony - Rumour: Wii-mote like controller for the PS2

http://life.tweakers.net/nieuws/48180/Sony-maakt-Wii-kloon-van-PlayStation-2.html (Dutch, based on Electronic Gaming Monthly article)

If true I think this would be great for 3rd party developers, being better able to support the PS2 and Nintendo Wii simultaneously.

However the best Wii-mote based games so far have been Nintendo's own Wii exclusives. The price advantage would however go to the PS2, rumoured to be around 100 dollar before christmas.

However personally I hope there would be PS3 specific games supporting such a controller as well, as far more complex and graphics/audio wise more impressive games would be possible.

hmmm this was discussed in another thread wasn't it?

I think for this to work Sony would have had to release it before the Wii.

Help! I'm stuck in a forum signature!

I think this was being discussed somewhere else, but I think it is no longer on the front page.

I doubt 3rd party developers will actually be developing for it, unless they expect a huge amount of people to be buying it. It is more like a peripheral, and those rarely ever work.

I'll wait until E3, see if this is true.

Really? Must have missed it.

I think that would have been bad for Nintendo, killing some of the Wii-hype. However now with 3rd parties getting familiar with such controls, I think Wii development could benefit.

I really hope the Wii will catch the XBox 360 in hardware sales this year.

Rumble was added to the original Playstation later on as well. And what about Guitar hero, they came with Guitars and sold really well. I think if a good game would be bundled with such a controller next to being available as a standalone peripheral for the already existing huge install base there's quite a bit of potential.

rumble was added to the PS pretty early on in its life. The PS2 is essentially on its way out, I can't see this succeeding

@MikeB

I know about Guitar Hero, hence, rarely.

Rumble was the addition to the controller. Sony is adding a whole new controller wand. Not the same as a hardware update to the controller.

As for a bundled game, well, that is just speculation. Lets wait for an official anouncement.

If they put the controllers at affordable prices and start to bundle them with the PS2 this could work .Then we would have a high market with the PS3 and X360 and a cheap and casual market with the PS2 and the Wii with motion controls .

The PS2 was globally the best selling home console of 2006 and is still outperforming the XBox 360 and PS3 in global hardware sales.

I think the same arguments used to defend the Nintendo Wii can be used for the PS2, for simple fun games you don't need the best sound and graphics. And of course the PS2 has an impressive install base and a price advantage over the Wii.

The PS2 games I recently bought for my PS3 are good fun, games Ape Escape 3 (cartoon-like Japanese graphics) and God of War 2 (almost looks like a next gen game) even look pretty good. Tiimeless beauty, I would even appreciate many years down the road nomatter how much more impressive PS3 games like Rachet and Clank or Killzone will be.
