Forums - Microsoft - Blu-Ray for 360??

While bargain hunters are busy scouring the bargain buckets for the recently deceased Xbox 360 HD DVD Player, Microsoft are wasting no time mourning the loss of a not-so-loved one, instead looking to a decidedly blue future. Originally their support of HD-DVD was more of a strategic maneuver than a technology based one, and now Toshiba have officially thrown in the towel, Microsoft needs to act fast to take on Sony's PlayStation 3 in the HD movie playback stakes.

If rumours are to be believed, Microsoft are set to release an external Blu-ray drive for the 360 as early as oct 2008. Officially, the only word from Microsoft comes from CEO Steve Balmer, stating the company 'will support Blu-ray in ways that make sense.' It doesn't take much reading between the lines to say that it probably 'makes sense' to support the only remaining contender in the HD movie format business. Combined with the recent announcement of a European price drop, a reasonably priced optional Blu-ray add-on seems like an obvious choice. While this kind of story should come with a fair amount of opportunity for gloating over corpoarte u-turns, Microsoft have alway maintained that they would entertain a Blu-ray drive if it happened to succeed.

would you like to see a blu ray xbox 360?? Discuss!

They already said many many many times its not coming for a long time. That said, they also said that they do want a partnership with blu-ray some time.

.................. go away.

They also said that doing an external drive in impractictical and wasn't in their best interests due to the costs of doing it externally.

Tease.

WTH!!! I HAVE CRIED MYSELF TO SLEEP EVERY NIGHT AFTER THAT FATEFUL MONDAY WHEN MICROSOFT *STOLED* MY FFXIII, YOU KNOW WHAT A BLU RAY ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE 360 WILL DO TO ME???

lol on all seriousness, it won't be a 360 with a blu ray drive, but more than certainly an accessory, which im certain every sony fanboy will gloat about. But i wouldn't understand why they would do this, don't they have a partnership with Netflix for consumers to digitally stream movies to the 'box? Unless it's not already full* HD of course.

Eventually, MS will be incorporating Blu-ray whether it's an add-on this gen or built into the 720 - whether fanboys like it or not.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

.... EVERY MONTH MS SENDS A PRESS RELEASE STATING THE BLU RAY DRIVE WILL NOT COME TO THE 360!!!

I don't need it I can see Blu Ray movies with my PS3 but a add on could be usefull I think for some X360 only owners (add on only for movies).
