Forums - General - VGC debate topic #2: Equality

I see equality is slowly becoming better and better for everyone. But there are some hiccups. Gay Rights is one of the slowest, but I see in a few more decades, it will be run of the mill and accepted.

As well, equality is trying to be sped up for minorities in things like Affirmative Action, and in gender, by Title IX, both which are very bad things. Equality takes time, and trying to make everything even faster is just making things worse for everyone.

But being a white male in America, I more than anything am seen as the bad guy. I can affend everyone, without many perks to be frank. Because of history, and others' actions throughtout the present or past, its hard for me to find the same opportunities as minorities or women. Just for example, there are absolutely no scholarships or grants for white males. There are so many for minorities of every creed and as well for women. Coming from a school that had about a third white population, lets just say I am grateful to be in the top of my class and to have the opportunity for Military scholarships or else I would have student loans out of my ass.

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

everyone should be treated as equal, which means no preferential treatment for anyone.

Ya. I could write a response with massive amounts of logic, but that would probably baffle you and waste my time. But I can't believe no one has called racism on teh black college fund and whatnot. Although I live under a rock and don't hear about these things.

There is no equality, nor will there ever be.

We are not born equal.

In America we belive all are created equal they just wont end up that way.  Which follows our Capitalism rather than a socialist society.  Now people are not born equal completely due to financial reasons.  We have to be able to draw equality at some line in order to preserve our way of capitalism.

Still equality will never exist even if you remove money from the equation.  There are many problems we still have today and must be worked on but new problems will always arise.  It is our duty to fine the lines at which we can agree.  For instance Gay mirrage.  Shall we allow it?  We should if equality is what we want but then we are ingoring the beliefes of some and that isnt equal either.  We need to find agreements.  Like civil unions.

ill type more on this later after I read more stuff from you guys.

in my opinion, gay rights are much more important than religous fundies rights

In a capitalist society which is the best kind there is equality exists in the sense that everyone has the same opportunity for greatness as everyone else and everyone has to work to achieve that. Sure some of us may end up rich and some may end up poor but we all had equal opportunity from the beginning.

well done, that is how it works in theory, sadly it does not work like that in practice

The way I see equality is like this.

Does equality exist in your city/province/state/country/world as a whole? No. Will it ever? Possibly. Does equality exist based on an individual? Yes and no depending on the person. I really don't give two shits if one group of people hates another, or if someone hates blacks, mexicans, indians, asians, whatever. What matters to me is that I treat every person as an individual and treat them how they treat me. This matters because foremost it sets a positive example for my children, who HOPEFULLY, will lead the same example for their children and their children and so on. Equality isn't something that can be fixed overnight, or fixed in a few years. It will take GENERATIONS of parents instilling firm morals and strong belief systems in their children before any radical changes can be made.

A lot of change has occurred during the past generations, but not nearly enough. Take your grandparents as an example. Many of them still hold the same racial dislike/hatred as existed in their generation. When our children have children and we (16-25) near our grandparents ages, things will be radically different depending how things happen during the transition. If world wars break out, or some lunatic genocidal nut nearly eradicates a race of people that'll slow the process, but if INDIVIDUALS practice equality then in a few decades we'll see some real change.
