Forums - Gaming - Embrace The Darkness (56k warning)

Comes out August 21 apparently.

I just found out you can watch full movies in the PS3 version on a television....

Everything from To Kill a Mocking Bird to Nosferatu (yes the first vampire movie ever made). AMAZING, I've always wanted to see that movie.

Watch full length movies.... like IN the game??? That is very cool....

oh yes, and please tell us about the darkness, I think I may be late getting back from a break if it's good!!!!

Alright. To the guy wondering about 360 versus PS3 version here are the pros and cons of each:

360 version:

Better Anti Aliasing and apparently has this motion blurring effect. I actually prefer the PS3 version without it (Seen the trailers) but apparently some people like that better.

PS3 version:

There is more content in the movie watching feature and it does have accomplishments which means you get to see the trophies on Home later. Accomplishments are the PS3's version of achievements from Live apparently.

Overall I think both versions are too close to think one is really superior to the other. So go with whichever one you want. I got the PS3 version but I've been reading up on the differences people are noticing in comparing the two.

I ended up getting the X360 edition. The PS3 copy was sold out and noone could confirm onine voicechat for the PS3 game.

So far im liking it - but i just got it so ill reserve the spanking for later when i get the hang of the game...

As for the actual game. I've played like 4 hours and am taking a break now, here are my impressions:

Positive:

- Great voice acting and some great dialogue much better than most games easily.

- Looks great (not the best looking game ever but certainly a great looking game next to the best)

- Has a lot of cool little features that I'm surprised the developers put so much effort into. For example: the tv watching feature has a bunch of movies and some musical videos in it.

- One word to describe the game: Cinematic. Seriously it feels like you're playing a movie, and I mean that positively. From the second the game starts you are in this crazy scene which I will not describe so as not to spoil it for people, but it's definitely very good start to the game. Everything is made to feel like it's not a linear game experience (at least to a greater extent than most FPS for sure).

This is done in a few ways. Technically you walk around town from objective to objective and you could just sit there and mess around if you wanted (this is only limited though so definitely not a sandbox game). You get phone calls that lead you to call back some people that in turn lead you to events. Events all happen like real events in sequence, they're not just levels to complete. Everything feels like it's a natural sequence of events except every once in a while you get another shock and you go: 'What the fuck just happened?'

It is a very different game I gotta say. It has a lot of dark humor and is really dark in general which I like. Everything isn't just running around shooting guys in their face, sometimes sneaking and using other methods are a lot more useful so that keeps some variety in the confrontations. The AI isn't that great, but the enemies shoot pretty hard so the game isn't exactly forgiving.

You do engage in stuff that definitely don't happen in other shooters, such as some day to day events and there is building of characters more than most shooters, and the relationship between the main character and his gf is emphasized. But the relationship between the Darkness and Jackie is also very important. I won't go further into this (spoilers) but it makes the game interesting.

Negative:

- No map. This goes with the whole trying to make you feel like you're in a movie feel, but it gets annoying cause you need to check mapstands on the streets to figure out what streets you need to go to. LISTEN to the street names people give you because you need to remember them.

- Creatures roll out too slowly. I felt that the Darkness abilities came into the game too slowly. The lifting and throwing huge objects with the tentacle doesn't appear in the first chapter of the game and I felt should have been available earlier.

- The aiming isn't great, but it's manageable.

That's pretty much a summary of what I thought so far. I really like how cinematic it is though and it's really pulled off nicely. Twists and changes happen very suddenly and character dialogues feel realistic and not stiff like most games.

It's definitely more original and surprising than most games and it's definitely a crazy journey and is getting progressively crazier as you go.
