The 360 has been out just under twice the time the PS3 and Wii has but just higher scores on those charts.

I expected better things from a one year head start.

I think the headstart thing is old hat at this stage.

all 3 consoles have been out long enough to have there act together.

after all this is sonys third machine.

Just because you've heard it before doesn't mean it's not true, or that the "old hat" doesn't fit. 2.5 years is a pretty big difference from 1.5 years. The 360 has about 550 games registered with the ESRB, whereas the PS3 only has about 280. Sheer numbers make for "better library"... but if you're going to drag the PS2 into this with "Sony's 3rd machine", you'd have to drag in the PS2 library as well. God of War 1/2, and most of the good PS2 JRPGs, still kick the behind of any X360 game I ever played.

I love my 360, but.. comeon... its not the savior of the console world.

Still when you constantly hear people saying the ps3 is the superior machine you would imagine every game is better on it.

Hence it should be ahead, lots of ps3 owners on this site anyway seem to regard the 360 as inferior.

The PS3 is a superior piece of hardware, with a considerably more difficult architecture to develop for... much like the PS2 relative to the GC or XBox (except that the PS2 was inferior to the XBox, and arguably so to the GC). That didn't stop developers from making a ton of great games for the PS2, however, probably due to the 1-year headstart it had.

Frankly, the current situation, with excellent 1st party exclusives for both consoles, but cross-platform games lagging behind on the PS3 until recently (GTA4, DMC4, Oblivion were all at least as good on the PS3, by most accounts), is exactly what I would expect at this stage in the life cycles of both consoles.

We, as consumers, won't really know which platform is "better" for another couple years, in my opinion. Development-wise, this is circa 2002-3 of the last generation -- the years a large number really big PS2 game series first emerged (the first episodes of Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, FF X, to name just a few). The truly amazing games on the PS2 (and XBox, for that matter: e.g. God of War, FF 12, R&C 3, Jak 3, Fable, Forza, etc.) didn't really start appearing regularly until nearly 2004-5. Even the sports titles didn't really hit their stride until about then (Madden 2005, NBA Live 2005, NHL 2005 are regarded as landmarks of the last gen, in sports).

well why do something stupid like that after all people dont want to know the ins and outs of there console they just want to play games on it.

I'm gonna guess its due to the 2nd part of what I said: "That didn't stop developers from making a ton of great games for the PS2, however, probably due to the 1-year headstart it had."

I'm going to take a guess and say that Sony wagered that the empassioned developers who worked so hard to make great PS2 games that looked and played as well or better than games on the XBox and GC, would be pleased to find their hard work actually pay off with hardware that was actually superior to its competition. Honestly, if a developer knew how to get great performance out of the PS2, jumping to the PS3 isn't a huge leap -- squeezing performance out of the PS2 required very similar thinking, and provided results that were arguably on par with the "superior" architectures of the GC and XBox.

I wouldn't be surprised to see PS3 games begin to outpace their 360 counterparts in the near future. Then again, I honestly don't think it matters as much in the "HD era" as it did previously. Gameplay is coming around as being the thing people are looking for in a game, over good looks and "WoW" factor, so being a technically more or less powerful console may never really be an issue.

On only a few counts will the power of the PS3 really outshine the 360, for most titles... games that utilize the number crunching power of the Cell for en-masse character animations and physics -- like the upcoming MMO shooter from Sony, for example, or any MMO style game where large numbers of characters or NPC are required. Otherwise, it's all on the developer to make it good -- the platform doesn't matter.

Comparing the PS3 and 360 is like comparing the PS2 and the GC. Some people will argue up and down that the GC is as powerful as the XBox, and thus the Wii is mighty... I say "whatever". The games are what make the console in the end. They're all close enough... except maybe the Wii, which is dangerously "last gen", in my opinion.

The library count is what skews the "has better games" judgement, at this point, without question.

look i hope you are right but they are in a different place this time.

I remember an article about developers complaining about the ps2 and sony telling them to get there act together which they did.

this time its like a mirror image with developers finding the 360 much easier to develop for.

my point been when you are in third place you dont have the same pull.

I have seen nothing yet on the ps3 that looks better than 360 games.

Its not as big as say IGN or gamespot, but its an old and prominant games site.

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.

According to this GamesRadar piece, Xbox 360 has the best games in all but one genre compared to Wii and PS3.

Another win for 360 owners

This was posted yesterday... PS3 has the best adverage between all of its games.

B

Stealth action game:Metal Gear Solid 4:Guns of the Patriots and Splinter Cell DA against Splinter Cell DA on the X360.

Plattform:Ratchet and Clank against .....nothing on the X360.

Quizz:Buzz the Master Quizz against the mediocre Scene It.

Music:Singstar ,Guitar Hero III and Rock Band against GH3 and Rock Band for the X360.

Tactical RPG:Disgaea 3 and Valkyrie of the Battlefield against ....again nothing on the 360.

Beat them all:Yazuka Kenzan ,Heavenly Sword ,Devil May Cry 4,Ninja Gaiden Sigma ,Dynasty Warriors 6 against Ninja Gaiden II ,Dynasty Warriors and Devil May Cry 4 on the 360.

Sports :Pretty much the same on both formats ....but the PS3 has the best baseball game with MLB The Show 08 and one of the best golf game with Everybodys Golf Out of Bounds.

Camera based motion games:Trials of Topoq ,Operation Creature etc on the PS3 against pretty much nothing on the 360.

Are you really sure the 360 has the best games in each genre?

Xbox 360 has been out for 32 months.  PS3 and Wii have only been out for 20 months.  That's %30 longer, so I expect the 360 to be ahead in having more better games by %30 more, not %5 more good games that PS3 or Wii.

PSN: EDguila

PS3 library:  Motorstorm, Assasin's Creed, Orange Box, Uncharted:DF, Metal Gear Solid 4, Resistance:FOM, Rachet & Clank Future:ToD,

Near future: Folklore, SOCOM Confrontation, BioShock, Little Big Planet, Resistance 2.

yay....

My Top 5:

Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger

My 2 nex-gen systems: PS3 and Wii

Prediction Aug '08: We see the PSP2 released fall '09. Graphically, it's basically the same as the current system. UMD drive ditched and replaced by 4-8gb on board flash memory. Other upgrades: 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, blutooth, motion sensor. Design: Flip-style or slider. Size: Think Iphone. Cost: $199. Will be profitable on day 1.
