I took my Xbox360 down to a friends house and I bought along my copy of Halo 3 for some split screen fun, and I went to three local rental places to check out what other games to grab and apart from CODIV I couldn't see a single game that interested me for local multiplayer. I grabbed marvel ultimate alliance just in case but that was about it.

We had a great time with that one game - it was awesome being in the same room and blowing each other away, very personal and probably some of the best fun I've ever had on a console.

But my question is - where are the OTHER games? There aren't any cool hack n slash - the Racers are too hardcore to take over and expect people to enjoy them.. It feels like this mode is dead for now. Even games like Left 4 dead are only Coop for two local players...

Its quite disapointing and its probably one of the reasons why the Wii is so popular, they have 4 player games coming out of their ears and rears. I would have taken my Wii except for the fact that I don't own Mario Kart/Super smash bro brawl or more than two Wiimotes/more than one nunchuck. I think for the future I'll have to buy 2 more controllers, 3 nunchucks and a few more games because it seems that Microsoft and Sony aren't even aware of this social aspect of Consoles.

Yeah they're not a whole lot of them. I would like to see a Champions of Norrath 3

Samething happened to me tonight. Went to Blockbuster to look for a 4-player game and the majority was either single player, 2-player, or only had online play. Online is cool but I want local multiplayer so that I can play with my actual friends.

My PS3 just told my Wii that it has nice legs

Next gen power, but less than last gen in terms of local multiplayer. Why isn't it getting better?!?!?! :(

On the PS3 side, Warhawk, Resistance, COD4 (already mentioned), and Haze(lol)  have 4 player split screen.

Perhaps Halo pulled this off so well that no other publisher wants to touch it...

Halo does do this very well, but all kidding aside, I'm not sure why there aren't more competitors in this space. Halo parties are very popular, but many of us want more variety in split screen games. Be glad you have a 360... the guys at work with PS3s keep bemoaning the fact that they can't find 4-way split-screen co-op and deathmatch games.

EDIT: the PS3 owners at work complain they can't find "good" split-screen games.  I'll let them determine what's good/bad since I don't have a PS3 and can't really make a determination.

Online Multiplayer is clearly to blame for this

although, my friends and I have a surprising amount of fun with 1v1v1v1 COD4

We also play games like FIFA and NHL 2v2 or even 3v3, that can also be a lot of fun.
