300 was far too thin to actually make a movie out of. Sure there were many added scenes, but I felt that it all helped the film, not deter from it. When I say faithful, I don't mean basing your entire directing duties on making sure every frame of the comic is shown live on screen like in Sin City. Sin City suffered because they took the novels raw and didn't add or subtract what worked or didn't work for a movie adaptation. I don't see why they couldn't have taken some liberties. I mean Frank Miller was completely involved in it. |
Exactly; the book takes hardly any time at all to read. So if you're going to go ahead and make a movie out of it, why not keep it similarly fast-paced instead of dragging it out into something that lasts for nearly two hours? The tone of the movie was quite different, what with the "fantasy beasts" that never appear in the book, and all the added scenes of Leonidas's wife were completely ridiculous and implausible.
Personally, I really enjoyed Sin City and was thrilled to see such an accurate rendition of the books. They already play out in a very film-like way to begin with, so I don't think any creative liberties were necessary. Compared to 300, the pace of Sin City is lightning fast, as they're packing three full graphic novels (each of which are individually longer than 300) worth of material into a very similar running time. That's how it should be, as far as I'm concerned. I sincerely hope that the "Family Values" plot is included in a future film; I'd love to see that brought to life.
