Last 3 months - loss. But for the year ending June 30 they made like $400,000,000. You have to remember though that it includes things like Zune as well.

The last 3 months according to the chart say -188 while the entire year says 426. (Measured in millions obviously)

I could have sworn MS' fiscal year started in Apr.

I don't think the 360 itself is actually making any money. It's just that the other products and services in their Entertainment and Games division have made enough money to usurp the 360's losses.

Does no one else find it odd that even with the Zune and its accessores, Zune marketplace mice, keyboards, and game controllers, mobile software, and games for windows that MS only posted a profit of 89 million dollars last quarter, or am I alone in this?

You need to spend money to make money.

As of three months ago Microsoft still wasn't breaking even on the 360 hardware.

http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/microsoft/archives/137377.asp?source=rss

"Does the operating profit mean that the company is no longer losing money on the Xbox 360 hardware?

Colleen Healy, Microsoft's general manager of investor relations, didn't answer that question directly when I asked this afternoon. However, she said, "What I can confirm for you is we're making really good progress on that cost curve.""

I don't know if they have been asked again after this latest quarter but that answer didn't sound like they were close to breaking even on the 360 hardware manufacturing costs.

No. Their FY is from July 1st to June 30th. Read the article.

Research and development is what they said is being the culprit for increased costs as well as marketing. Plus they had a pretty slow quarter with very few big titles out. (GTA is the only huge one off the top of my head.)

Edit: Also the "Research and Development" rhetoric can mean a lot of different things so unless we get direct info I don't think we can really get any specifcs on what is a draw down on MS. *Awaiting RROD bomb*

price-cuts and jRPG money-hattings I believe.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials
