I like Nintendo's current products, and what they are doing with them.
There seems to be lots of software for lots of tastes.

There is definitely one thing that Nintendo has done in the past few years I do not like at all though, and that is how they handled the DS Internet Cartridge. The problem I have is that you cannot connect to any (any as in "any of all available", not any as in the "opposite of none") open WiFi system that has any sort of an internal authentication. But supposedly, there is a small group (corporation connections) of WiFi connections that the DS can connect to this way.

So, basically Nintendo crippled the usability of DS Interenet for the sake of a handful of corporate deals. Poo on them.

I think you're confused.

Firstly, you don't need to buy the browser to have online. It's nice, but not neccessary - the DS is a gaming device.

Secondly, it's not a corporate monopoly - the DS came out before the widespread adoption of WPA encryption and has no mechanism for firmware update. Nintendo only supported WEP encryption, which fewer people have because it's less secure. "Corporate" connection don't usually use any wireless security because they are free to use.

Sorry for wording it poorly.  Yes, I know the DS can connect to the internet without the DS Browser, but the DS Browser itself cannot connect to the internet in the case of manually authenticated public sessions (even with no encryption of any form, WEP or WPA).

An example of this is many airports in Canada allow free unencrypted access online, but one has an to go through a (free) authentrication process (much like one has to login to VGCHARTZ before allowing posts).  This process will not work with the DS Browser in general.  My understanding is that this does work for certain hotel chains I believe.  It is a pre-arranged limitation by Nintendo in partnership with those "hotel chains" or whoever they are.

It's sounds really strange, but it is the case.

Around the Network

I found this explaining the DS WiFi. If someone knows better (I so want to be doing something wrong with this!):

""I have made several testing, and it seems that the Nintendo DS Browser has some issues connecting to captive portals because of a connectivity check made by the Nintendo DS Browser (using Nintendo Wi-Fi connection). The Browser tries to access this website (http://conntest.nintendowifi.net/), and if it cannot access the content of this page, it automatically drops the connection. Captive portals networks redirect any anonymous access to a login page, and this page cannot be accessed by the Nintendo DS Browser without being logged, so this end up being in a loophole (can't access http://conntest.nintendowifi.net/, therefore cannot open the login page, and in the end cannot use the network access).""

My title may seem kinda contradictory, but it does not as a matter of fact. Let me clarify!

On the other hand, I hate Nintendo, because;

a) They would often feel no shy to employ sinister policies, like barring third parties from developing games from other consoles (this felt especially bad against Sega in the past).

b) Many irritating policies like overwhelming copy protection paradigms, sticking to cartridges and imprisoning the companies to expensive propriety formats.

c) Their games suck. I truly hate Nintendo games. I can't stand playing any type of mario or pokemon games or such, maybe Wii Play, wii sports kind of games could be exception, never played them yet.

e) Nintendo is an innovative company, though I hate mario, I adore (original) crash bandicoot games, or though I hated Mario kart, I loved Crash team racing. So I gotta give them credit for their original ideas and innovativeness. However they lack dynamism. They didnt have the dynamism that Sega had in the past with Genesis and Dreamcast, and they still dont have the dynamism that Sony has brought into the industry with ps1, ps2 and ps3, which is also true for MS with Xbox and Xbox360.

I, myself, have never had a Nintendo console, but would stick to Sega and Sony consoles and maybe Xbox360 in the future. Yes I love wii as a machine but I hate the games, and what is it good for with no games that I like!? I still want Nintendo in this business because of their innovation and competition but I hate it when they dominate like this. I want Sony or Microsoft, whichever, to win immediately, LOL :)

Just my opinion gentlemen!

Just some thoughts on this.

(A) That was then. Now Nintendo is getting ripped for allowing anyone to do anything.

(B) So protecting profit by limiting piracy is a bad thing? (And the cart for N64 was as much because of the failed Sony deal as anything else).

(C) There are many other franchises -- Kirby, Star Fox, Pikimin, Zelda, etc. to choose from that are made by Nintendo.

(E) Sounds like you like things that are derivative rather than original (this relates for to CTR than the original Crash, btw).

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

the only thing i hate about nintendo is their products are way toooo expensive

"According to the Financial Times, this direct profit per Wii sold may vary from $13 in Japan to $49 in the United States and $79 in Europe."

that stopped me from buying a wii...wii just cost $200($us) to make..a $30 price cut will be dam good

Nintendo cannot subsidize its efforts from other divisions like Sony and Microsoft have been doing.

The European profit I imagine is as much do to currency conversion as anything else.  Also, some of that may have been eaten away by increases in transportation costs over the last couple of years. Finally, the Japanese Wii does not come with Wii Sports while the North American and European/PAL units do. That makes me wonder if the FT (or someone) is putting an arbirtarily low value on the pack-in game. The profit is much different if you price it at $10 (the value based upon WiiPlay) or $30 (the amount most third parties charge for a similar style game) or $50 (the top price for a standard Wii game).

B) of course copy protection is not a bad thing but only as long as it does not harm innocent purchasers who has the greatest actual burden on themselves. I mean N64 owners, for example, paid much more for a game, got non-CD quality sound/music, crippled versions of many games and very few games in the end.  The only true advantage of cartridges were the fast loading time (not only because cartridge is faster but also there is a lot less data to load relative to 650 MB CDs). Many producers rejected developing games for N64, because

   a) the cartridge was limited in capacity,

   b) Nintendo was the sole producer at an expensive rate, and you had to gestimate the amount needed in advance as it took time (3 months or so) to produce the quanitity demanded and were non-refunable

   c) Nintendo was very harsh and snoopy in their licencensing issues. In fact it seems to have changed quite a lot now.

 C) I dont like those games at all, save Zelda and several other non-kiddy games though

 E) I think you're right. I mean I thank Nintendo for inventing (or popularizing) the concept but those ideas were best implemented by other developers like Naughty Dog and Insomniac Games. I was not a platform gamer at all untill I saw Crash Bandicoot and Spyro. Tekken and Crash are the reason why I'd bought psx in the first place.

Thank you for reading :)
