HD DVD and Blu-ray only have 10%.

What's New

The Black Friday Sale showed a very important fact. Only 10% of the players sold were an HD DVD or Blu-ray machine.

It may be a fact that DVD sales are not at their highest, but the format remains strong and alive.

According to market analyst DisplaySearch, 57,000 HD DVD and Blu-ray stand-alone players were sold during the important "Black Friday" week that ended Nov. 24. Of those, 62% were HD DVD and 37% Blu-ray. In comparison, 600,000 standard DVD players were sold.

DisplaySearch predicted that if sales continue this way, the different formats will stand as follows at the end of 2007:

HD DVD Stand-alone players: 678,000
XBOX 360 HD DVD drive: 270,000
Blu-ray Stand-alone players: 461,000
Playstation 3: 2.5 million

This is actually good news for hi-def. Even if movie sales are stuck at 5%, getting more players is a good start. They just need to get movie prices down now.

Regarding the rumors that Warner might be wanting to move soon to BD...

This came from that VP of Lionsgate, another movie studio. And the Sony, Disney insiders have indicated that they have heard the rumors as well, and they both think that this Lionsgate guy is a bit foolish for saying this b/c it could mess up whatever plans are in the works. P-man a sony insider has also hinted that a date has been set for Warner's move but he won't explain when pressured to. Sony appears to be convinced that these rumors do hold some weight at the very least or they might in fact know of the decision, as they have been concentrating on Warner titles for their BOGO discounts. I wouldn't be surprised that they continue to concentrated on Warner all month long. Just my $0.02

Thanks to kenobi after I got him to ban my old account (dallas) after someone hacked into it and being ok with me coming back under a slightly different username.  I appreciate our communication in the PMs.  Also I want to give a big thank you to vgchartz for being one of the cooler websites around.

Oh, and I'm still the next Michael Pachter

would have made more sense to just say it outloud to yourself, as you successfully bumped the thread for more to see....nice work, friend.

Also, if you dont like it, dont read it.....eh?

Thread should also be moved to General or Off Top or whatever this forums name is fo rit.....since HD DVD has to do with MSFT as well, also, if a mod could alter the title to "The BD vs HD DVD thread" thatd be cool too.....no point in keeping the name some troll used is there?

Woah, baby. This could add a lot of fuel to the flames.

Next wave of HDTV adopters may lean towards HD DVD

If there's one group that likes the format war, it's market analysts. The latest prognostication comes from The Diffusion Group (TDG), which looked at consumers intending to bite into the HD fruit in the next six months. These "HDTV Intenders" tend to, among other things, have a lower income than the "early adopters" who have already taken the HD plunge. But here's the rub: among these "HDTV Intenders," TDG finds that 43% prefer HD DVD and 27% Blu-ray. If that figure holds up, will it be enough to decide the format war? TDG expects this group of mass-market buyers to open their wallets as the early adopter wave settles down in he beginning of 2008. No doubt about it, we've seen growing evidence that both HDM camps are reaching for lower price points.

First of all, I am NOT presenting this as proof HD-DVD will win. With good marketing, and using the PS3's userbase, blu-ray can still pull out ahead.

Second of all, this is based on a survey, not just analysts making wild predictions, so it has some crediblity.

Third, my real point her is that, so far, 70% of the potential next wave of HDTV owners is interesting in HD movies. And looking at the description of these people shows this is the first mainstream wave of HDTV buyers.

IF this is true, hi-def films are about to hit mainstream!

Warner Bros. on HD DVD, Blu-ray: No changes in support for either format

Web forums were ablaze this morning because of a controversial report  by Rich Greenfield of Pali Research, saying in 2008 Warner Bros. would cease support of HD DVD and become Blu-ray only.  As a syndicated newspaper columnist I have contacts within the industry and found the whole thing suspicious and oddly timed. My PR contacts put me in touch with Jim Noonan, Warner Bros. Senior Vice President and General Manager, for clarification.  I received a response almost immediately and his reply is as follows:

“Dear Mr. Lindich, We have made no decision to change our present policy which is to produce in both HD DVD and Blu-ray.”

No denial, no silence as one would expect if change was in the works… I received a quick confirmation that their policy won’t be changing.  Nothing surprising here, given Warner’s strong support of the HD DVD  format with exclusives such as The Matrix and Batman Begins, as well as Warner’s embracing of HD DVD’s web interactivity on the new Harry Potter titles.  To learn more about the differences between the HD DVD and Blu-ray Harry Potter titles, see The State of HD DVD at gizmodo.com.

It is possible Warner could swing one way or the other in 2008, but for now, it’s undecided and that’s straight from a Warner executive.

News like this really just means they cant say anything about their decisions "now".  Its like when Walmart said they had no plans to carry a cheap hddvd player.

It should be taken like this.

“Dear Mr. Lindich, We have not yet made a decision to change our present policy which is to produce in both HD DVD and Blu-ray.And if we did I couldnt tell you"

PS360 ftw!

Currently playing..........

Gears of War 2, GTA IV Lost and Damned, Little Big Planet (Yes I said I had no interest but my girl wanted to try it and we did and now Im hooked )

In fact the PS3 will have far more than 2.5 million sold end of 2007 .Its already about 2.95 million and still 3 weeks until end of the year .And this war is worlwide ,not just NA-only ,and worlwide the Blu.Ray is crushing the HD-DVD sales-wise .

Has anyone read on what Golvellius wrote and this article?
