Forums - Gaming - What is the advantage of Blu-ray to Sony now?

Onimusha12, I disagree that Bluray isn't a needed format or even a questionable step forward. With the advent of HDTVs, we are moving to HD source material. HD channels, HD movies, HD games. I for one, am glad that they introduced the Bluray format. DVDs look great on my CRT projection TV, but they look like crap on my 1080p LCD TV.

That is perfectly fine, I disagree though in feeling much of the HD movement is being pushed prematurely. While new technologies will always cost more, the sheer cost of HD TVs and HD Gaming has left me at the very least in a state of shock as I imagine it has most consumers. All we can do now is wait and see what comes of the situation.

Thank god Credit Cards exist, or else the HD movement may have had a harder start than what it has.

DMeisterJ - Keep it civil with Onimusha12.

At any rate, though, HDTV prices aren't as horrible as you think.

You can still go out and buy a 19" HDTV pretty cheap:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8632848&type=product&id=1194052042293

720p Flatpanel HDTV in 19" for under $300. The issue with the HDTV movement is that companies are pushing bigger and bigger TVs, as the American demand for excess continues to grow - all of the TVs I've normally owned are in between 19-23", yet most HDTVs you will see at the stores (at least where I live) are 28" or higher. This is why we think HDTV's cost more, but they don't as bad as you think. Also, with the FCC cutting analog TV signals in the near future, add the price of a DTV box to your normal TV (which most HDTVs come with integrated), and you can see why the price is as "high" as it is.

Big-Screen TVs cost has been much reduced thanks to HDTVs. It used to be a big 'ol 50" TV would cost you $3,000+ and be rather nasty to get the large size. But you can get a nice 50" for under $3k anywhere, and even go as low as $1,499 for such a large TV!

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Blu-Ray is not a bad format, I am not saying it will fail, I'm not saying I hate it, however I feel I've made valid points in showing it to be too little too soon in terms of a format change and a questionable step forward this soon after DVD has only established itself as the standard. Yet despite the relatively passive tone of my contributions, I'm attacked immaturely by individuals such as DMeisterJ while the majority of my points and arguments are ignored in favor of adressing things I was never directly adressing or talking about.

Let me ask you this. Did you feel this way about S-VHS? If not, why do you now? It's exactly the same thing.

You keep saying "format change". The only thing that has to change to take advantage of BD, is a more expensive player. The player will still play all your DVD's.

To me, a format change that one would care about, is one where you have to update all your media to take advantage. This is not the case.

I think where people take issue, is this is a seamless upgrade in quality that is very easy to take advantage of, yet you still fight it. If you don't want to be on the leading edge of technology, keep buying DVD's for the next 5 years, and get a BD player when they cost $75. You can't use the argument that you need to upgrade your disks, because you say it's too little to late anyway.

I find it hard to see why BD or HD-DVD is a bad thing (BD happened to win, but it would be the same if HD-DVD did), just like I found it hard to think S-VHS was a bad thing.

poor Onimusha12, who, as usual, intead of responding to my points, merely whines about being attacked. Perhaps if you weren't always against anything Sony, people would be more inclined to believe you are sincere.

Windabane, DMeister just got warned for the same thing two posts above you.  Please don't be that silly again and be please be civil (and this goes for everyone, it's perfectly easy to have a civil discussion on the internet without insulting people).

Ok, I'm just waiting for him to have this discussion he claims to want to have instead of a long post whining about how people won't have it with him. But whatever, it's not like it's going to go anywhere, anyway. He can leave my post unresponded to if he wants.

Give blu-ray a chance! It trampled all over HD-DVD, it will eventually dominate the planet, just like trees

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

So tell me Windbane. What points have I ignored that you feel I'm not adressing?
