Blu-Ray's sales ratio has averaged at 2:1 this year vs. HD-DVD according to the weekly Nielsen numbers. The combined factor of the PS3 and larger studio support (6 out of the 7 major movie studios) are just something HD-DVD cannot compete with, even if it does slash the sales of its players (which Sony is doing a good job of matching by releasing its $500 player which is already on shelves.) Sorry HD-DVD. Unfortunately, unlike the war between 360/PS3/Wii, this game is much higher stakes and either Blu-Ray or HD-DVD will eventually claim all the spoils. I just see no way under any circumstances that HD-DVD can mount a comeback unless they just start giving the players away. |
Sorry, but studios don't care how the entire format is selling. The only care how much their movies are selling. So if the sales ratio is even for each studio, that means that the ratio per studio is 2/6=.33:1/3=.33. Or if you count 7 studios for blu-ray, that's 2/7=.29:1/3=.33.
That means that neither studio is getting that much by supporting one format. Their sales are about the same. This is why Paramount and Warner are supporting both formats. They get the most sales.
Of course getting most sales of 1% of the home video market isn't exactly going to make the other side give up. It's still just one f*cking percent.
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
