Best Story; Don't know if it counts, as it's a SRPG, Final Fantasy Tactics, If it doesn't, Suikoden II, then Chrono Cross
Worst Story: Dragon Quest VIII by far

Did you ever play chrono trigger? If so why would you choose chrono cross over chrono trigger?

@ItsaMii what about FFVI or Chrono Trigger? Do you like their stories?

Is Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne better than Xenogears in terms of plot?

Is there a lot of story and does it deal with any thought provoking subject matter?

I never finished Xenogears, so i don't know exactly how deep is the story, but I'll base my judgement in Xenosaga, after all, they're made by the same people. Nocturne is very different stroy-wise, the cutscenes are pretty short and it doesn't explain a lot in the endings leaving much to interpretation (kinda like Shadow of the Colossus, but with more story). Overall, the plot is good, and very dark, but there aren't many plot twists that leve you with the jaw dropped

FF4 - the evil empire is killing people for magic crystals (in the end it is not even the empire). Stupid story, but the gameplay was gold for its time.

FF7 - overcomplicated, complex, confusing, translation issues. Half of the game is told in fake narrative, then all of a sudden they introduce a major plot twist and demand you to forget and ignore the last 20-25 hours of history.

FF8 - what the fuck is the game all about? Is it about the Gardens fighting evil empires? Is it a love story? Is it about the evil sorceress living in the moon? The game shifts its objeticve without giving any good reason for it.

FF X-2 - If you need an explanation you are part of the problem.

FF XII - One of the worst since FF 8. Fanboys will just scream that it is a political plot and call it a day. They have no clue what the word political mean. How the fuck the story is political focused? It is about a princess on a quest to retrieve magical rocks to fight the evil emperor (controled by an evil god), teaming with people dressed like circus performers. Try to do that in real world to see how absurd it is. Stalin team up with Hades, then the princess of one soviet colony (dressed like a cheap prostitute) go on a quest to get magic rocks more powerfull than nuclear weapons. She teams up with a criminal that apparently killed her family, 2 random orphans she find on the streets (one wearing a leotard and the other a gay outifit), a playboy bunny and a guy dressed like a croupier (son of Soviet Union most evil scientist).

Grandia 3 - Awful. Some dark god wants to destroy mankind and turn them into dolls because love is the cause of wars and evil.

Persona 3 - Very stupid. It is one of those games where the major plot twist is "bad is good and the good guys are evil". Basically you are a bunch of high school students trying to save the world from complete destruction. Guess who is trying to destroy it? A dark god. It is so retarded how you have to save the world but must go to classes every day and even find time to date and do school trips.

Xenogears - I was loving it untill the identity crisis near the end of the first CD. It is a very complex story focused on political aspects. However they ruin it trowing some random crap like reincarnation, multiple personalities, artificial gods. The game was rushed in the second CD and they didn`t make a good enough job to explain all the crazy plot twists near the end.

Shadow Hearts - The setting is original (1930). The gameplay is lame and the story is generic. Time to kill another dark god (even though the protagonist himself is a dark god).

Tales of Legendia - great character development like most Tales games. It would be ok if they ended it after the first half. Then they kill some characters on the second half, ressurect evil guys, change half of the cast personality and throw in a evil god just for originality.

Kingdom Hearts 2 - KH had everything to suck and I still liked it. The lighthearted and cliche story was somehow fresh compared to other SE games. In KH 2 they solved it by making it confusing and lame. It is aimed at teenagers who think Sephiroth is the most bad ass character ever. It does a very poor job of explaining the villains reasons. Some of them just introduce themselves, you fight, they die. They also had to add the personality disorder thing every FF 7 fan loves. No one is who they really are and everyone had at least 2 other alternate personas.

Chrono Cross - They fucked really hard and they know it. The plot was a mess. I can`t write it in less than 10 paragraphs. Basically the game had no connection to CT. When there is 20% left of the game they just explain everything in the most awkward way know to video game storytelling. The most important part of the plot is revealed before the last boss by 3 ghosts. The connections to CT are arbitrary and lame. Basically everyone is dead, some are evil (but they don`t want to be) and CT secondary characters are more important to the plot than the main characters. The last boss also wants to destroy all existence because he is angry.

Radiata Stories - the game make you feel like you have no control over your actions. In the middle of the game you must make a very important decision. The problem is that it is very arbitrary. Would you:
1) Save the woman you love betraying and dooming all mankind (including your family)
2) Save mankind, killing you loved one and every other rational species in the process. As a bonus you kill the gods and speed up the destruction of nature.

I have to disagree with you on Chrono Cross, Kingdom Hearts II, Xenogears, and Persona 3.

I can't tell how a JRPG story can be good anymore. People think that certain game's story were bad when I though they were good.

Best: The World Ends With You (with Persona 3 closely behind)

Two reasons

1) I've never finished Trigger, i know everybody will hate me, but I stopped playing, I don't remember exactly where, around when you beat Dalton, perhaps a bit further.

2) I love complicated stories full of plot twists. Trigger's, while undoubtedly excellent, was more straightforward than Cross', or Xenosaga's, or Suikoden's to give some examples.

Trigger had plenty of plot twists.  Just not the ones that make you either love or hate a game. *looks at Star Ocean 3*

Yeah, I can understand that. I can't believe it when I read that people say Star Ocean 3, Persona 3, FF VII, FF VIII and Chrono Cross had bad stories when I found them ranging from great to excellent

I love that one. I think it's brillant
