Forums - Sony - Warhawk Beta Impressions

So I finally got some time with the Warhawk Beta and I gotta say I am very impressed. Here are the few points that stuck out the most for me:

The good:

1. 32 player multiplayer was awesome and felt like an all out war with all the chaos and uncertainty of an actual battlefield. Teamwork definitely helps but there is also enough room for freedom of action that is a good relief from the very heavily team-work based multiplayer of Gears of War.

2. There is a special mode that is dogfight only that I didn't know about before I played the demo and it actually is extremely fun and entertaining. Flying around and shooting down other players while trying to survive and dodge the attacks from all directions was the best air combat fun I have ever had possibly. Also, and reall surprisingly, I actually liked the air combat in Warhawk a lot more than that in Battlefield 2 on PC which has been my favorite online multiplayer shooter for a while.

3. There was no lag whatsoever which shows me the dedicated servers route is really working for Sony.

4. Great weapons variety and you don't have to choose a class to choose a style of play. You are able to switch between all the weapons you pick up on the fly unlike Battlefield or Counterstrike where you choose a certain class or weapon(s) to play with.

5. The game looks good, better than I expected. It's not a graphical stunner like Gears of War or even Halo 3, but it definitely looks impressive.

6. Massive maps that are divided into two bases and great maps for the dogfighting scenarios that disperse items and upgrades around very well for you to pick up and increase your survival chances.

7. The button layout is actually very good and really makes it easy to do multiple things at the same time and switch between weapons and such on the fly. The interface is good and reminds me of a PC shooter's interface a little.

8. Customization of the characters and Warhawks adds a lot of flavor that was lacking in the Halo Beta for example and lets you stand out among others, especially for the Warhawks that look really cool when modified.

The Bad:

1. The motion controls felt very strange, uncomfortable and hard to manage so I just turned it off after trying to fly using them for a while. The motion controls were actually worse on the ground vehicles where it just felt outlandish and out of place at best.

2. There are known crash issues in the beta but they will probably fix before final game comes out. I experienced one crash in the 5 or so hours that I played.

3. The Beta download took very long, but I guess that's not really a criticism of the Beta but of the download itself.

4. It was hard getting used to the action at first and it took some time to get used to the pace of the game (very fast) and using the warhawk felt weird at first.

As you can see my only real issue was with the motion controls and the challenge of playing in the beginning but that can be said about a lot of online shooters (learning curve).

Overall I am surprised at how much fun I actually had with the game and how it felt like the game was pretty much complete already and could be released now without the need for too many changes. I'm actually relieved because I was worried they weren't going to pull off this kind of a shooter on a console but it worked out swimmingly.

Definitely can see myself spending a lot of time playing this game online when it comes out and will be playing it till the Beta ends.

Nice list. I've heard a lot of good things about this game, 'tis a shame I didn't get into the Beta.

It's funny one your negative comments is on the motion control, most of the people I've talked to praised that feature.
I've heard you can adjust the sensitivity of the SixAxis controls. If that is indeed true, have you tried playing around with it?

I did play around with it and still didn't like it, but I can look more into it later.

Halo 3 looks better than Warhawk. I said even Halo 3 because Halo 3 doesn't look as good as Gears, but it still looks better then Warhawk.

If I had to compare Warhawk with other big exclusive games on both systems I would list them as follows:

Gears of War > Ratchet > Mass Effect > Uncharted > Bioshock > Lair > Halo 3 > Warhawk >

Halo3 does not look better, it looks freaking awfull. Like a updated halo2.

You comparing the trailer or actual beta gameplay ?

Thanks for the info. Do ground units have any viability in gameplay? I figure you need some for holding objectives, but do they actually have fighting power to counter aircraft? Are ground units fun?

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

Yeah they are fun. And yeah you can take down planes sometimes pretty easily cause you got anti aircraft weapons (placed and mobile). I liked the ground combat too, it was very intense and back and forth, but I emphasized the air combat cause I was surprised how much I liked it. Usually I stay away from air combat and stay to the ground in games like these.

I never though the Halo Multiplayer was any good anyway. Too few maps, too few modes, and the modes that they did have were uninspiring. And the guy said that you are limited to a weapons class in Battlefield. As far as know, unless the PS2 version was different, you pick a class of weapon, but you can pick up whatever weapons are dropped. You can do that in Couterstrike too so I don't see where the is a pro over the other games. Sorry I am being nit picky. Until I play the game, I am going to withhold judgement. I remember Gengi being called a great game by the Xplay and Attack of the Show crowd.........then it came out. We all know how that worked out.

WarHawk beta was surprisingly fun. it felt like a huge war going on. Halo 3 did look alittle better but so far WarHawk was fun. Reminds me of Battlefield
