From the looks of it, the correct answer is: no one knows.
All we know, is EA now owns the franchise. We all know EA. think what you will about ME2, but until I hear a press release from EA, everything else is pure speculation.
Honestly, I thought it reminded me a lot of Star Trek with all the different cultures, races, the Alliance (like the Federation for Earth), etc. That's one of the reasons why I thought that the story was going to be awesome because everything made sense. We also get a great view of how the political affairs take place in the not-so-distant future! I thought the story was very well-written and the gameplay was plain awesome (even though there were some frame-drops).
By the way, the ending was just too epic, especially when you have invested a couple of months in the game like me (school was killing me). I always thought "Oh, this is how it all ends? Hmmm, ok..." but then other things start and stuff, etc. Let's just say I haven't been so proud to watch the credits of a game in my entire life (and the music was pretty good, it matched the style)!
I was sad at the same time because I would have to wait another year for a sequel though... Only thing I know is that according to Casey Hudson, Project Director for BioWare, players should keep their Mass Effect save-files, because decisions made by the player in the first game will continue to have influences on their character in the sequel. And yeah, I took that from Wikipedia!

i agree, it reminds me of star trek as well! i read the wikipedia stuff too, there isnt much on ME2 though

Of course it is. Which is why I'm wondering why you're not questioning Blazinhead rather than me.

there was a article stating that mass effect was a triliogy that MS paid for bioware to do on the 360 console. If it was in fact a contract, EA has to go by that contract
