Forums - Gaming - If the N64 had used CDs and Nintendo had been 'friendlier' to 3rd parties..

..before the 5th generation started, do you believe the PS1 would´ve been crushed and Sony would´ve left the market?....Maybe we wouldn´t even have had the Xbox, since apparently the reason MS decided to enter this industry was because they saw the PS brand as a threat, or so they say.....I wonder if we´d still have a 2 player scenario (Nintendo and Sega)....or a 3rd one would´ve entered anyway....

No, because the PS was a console that was suppose to make gaming mainstream, and here is the thing you guys aren't going to beleive "CASUAL" yep, that is right. The PS was the first casual console. So I don't think 3rd parties would matter. they sure haven't in the Wii's case.

Wasn't the NES the first casual console?

soo...if the n64 was the ps1...would the ps1 still be the ps1 or would it be the n64?

Back then there wasn't much of a difference between casual or hardcore, because almost everybody was starting gaming. Almost all games were hard though. Examples being Metroid and Zelda. I don't think hardcore was created until the Snes days.

I blame Pong.

Probably. If the N64 used cds and launched earlier it would've easily won the 5th gen. FF7, the PS's first real system seller,  and the rest of the FF series would've stayed Ninty. MGS and DQ7 would've been on the 64 too. The 64 wouldn't have sold 100 million like the PS, but surpassing the NES's 60+ million would've been likely.

Hey - a lot of us here had been playing games for a while before gen 5.  The PS1 did expand the market quite a bit though.
