RE4, I just love survival games. Although the RE series is moving from survival horror to survival action, I like the way it is going...

I say gears of war purely because I never played RE4... :)

If you like fast brutal action - GoW
If you like survival games with good story - RE4

RE 4 is better for single player people,
Gears is better for multi-player people.

Overall RE 4 is better.

That you are clueless? And that you haven't play Gears for more than 3 minutes. If you had, you would know, that these two games aren't comparable.

Gears: Third Person shooter, with crazy battles, the best cover system ever, cutting edge visuals, NON existent scenario, brainless fights, and absolutely FUN. Played it 4 times (Insane level included) and I will play it again

RE4. Absolutely gorgeous not so horror anymore-game, with similar (?) shooting mechanism that imo is absolutely frustrating (Leon can't f''''n' move when he's aiming??? WTF?), slow rhythm, great atmosphere, longevity but no online, lots of looting, absolutely horrible inventory system (I just Love it-mazochist talking :)  ). I finished it twice and I want to play it on Wii.

What exactly do you compare? The fact that both of them have shooting, ain't enough.

I thought Resi 4 was ok. It wasnt a horror game (which made it not the best resi, as resi is supposed to be scary) and it is not as good at 3rd person shooting game as Gears. Gears over Resi4

Resident Evil 4 is awesome. I've never actually played Gears but I've played RE4 and have beaten it at 100% on both GameCube and Wii. I've played through something like 100 times total since it came out and still play it. I don't know if Gears would hold my interest that much.
