Forums - Gaming - Price not GTA IV to blame for slow PS3, 360 sales, says analyst

Well the PS3 has failed to meet expectations. PS3 was expected to sell a lot better than it has been doing due to relying heavily on the Sony brand name to sell well. Is the PS3 in the shadow of the PS2?

People forget that MS are the under dogs and are not expected to do well and just fall over and die as the PS3 conquers all and wins console war as it is expected to do.

Sony has lost huge market share compared to last generation. Where are all the analysts who predicted PS3 would be continuation of the PS2 dominance?

Well, one of them is quoted in the article above, saying that the PS3 will be a continuation of the PS2 dominance (in 2010)

Just kidding.  I think what he's saying is okay; basically, as prices drop more people will buy them.  Which is true. Well, to a certain extent at least; by 2010 more people might not be buying them than there are people buying them NOW, but more people will almost certainly be buying them than pre-$200 price point in 2010. Also, by 2010 many many PS2 users will likely have upgraded to the Wii, which will limit the numbers upgrading to PS3 as well.

Read any recent interviews with Shane Kim of Microsoft lately and he is not (nor ever been) of the opinion that MS are the underdogs.

I think his opinion is more authoritative regarding the 360 than anyone here.

I am regarding before MS entered the video game console market. MS were the newcomers and were indeed the under dogs and they are yet to prove themselves as genuine heavyweights within the video game console market. Nintendo and Sony are seasoned veterans who have won console wars in the past and present.

how the hell can anyone come to the conclusion that gtaIV was to BLAME for slow console sales.. how stupid would you have to be

Let's just say that there really will be a major cut by 2010. But the problem is that would the public perception of the consoles deteriorate to the point that price cuts would have similar effects as it did for the GCN?

LOL 400$ consoles sell worse then 250$ consoles. News at nine.

But he has a good point, if you look at the PS2, it only took of in its second and especially third year when it got cheaper.

You do not need to be an analyst to say that the PS3 will sell loads more than now as well, when its price is at 300$ and 200$. It will still be the best hardware around, will have a great gaming library and perhaps even some motion controls. Nintendo will need to keep its casual gamers happy to compete with that.

There may be A next gen on the market by then with bc which would open it up for the person who will be determined by price.

And the hardcore gamers will go with the new one knowing they can play there old games on it.

Kyros, are you on something? The Ps3 already has motion controls. (although crappy ones.) It would be stupid for Ms or Sony to copy Wiimotes this gen as they will look like knockoffs compared to the original. They should wait till next gen when they all will come with something innovative.

(but, I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo discovered Virtual Reality nex gen.) :

All I can say is this, Nintendo took a MAJOR gamble and thought they wouldn't be able to catch the Ps3, yet the Wii has more than double the install base. The entire thing was on luck. While arrogant Sony acted like they had the largest nuts on the planet at the time.

Look how that turned out. The Wii is a success, which I am proud to have fun with and it's my 1st Nintendo console I ever owned. I'm proud of it. (this is coming from a past Sony fanboy. I just didn't feel like Nintendo's past consoles weren't popular enough to own but play during times at visits.)
