Forums - Gaming - So.... What's next for PSP???

In terms of hardware, the console has mantained steady but presenting weekly worldwide low sales ( at least in comparison with the DS). However, this has been while having good software to choose from, especially lately ( god of war , Crisis Core, War of the lions).

Now, I look at the  future software line-up for psp and what the hell? Spore, Secret Agent Clank and Monster Hunter II. Oh man Sony is just going all out for PS3 ( as the announced they would=( ).

I want to know what is your opinion on this situation, and what do you think will happen to psp if this continues?

My guess?

Slow and painful death at this point in time ...

The PSP has been on the market for over 3 years now, and has just over 50 titles that have sold 500,000 (or more) units; and only 85 titles which have broken the 250,000 barrier. I suspect it is becomming increasingly difficult to justify the development of PSP titles; if I am correct you will see less and less quality titles published for the PSP every quarter, and software sales will decline further which will result in less PSP games getting green-lit until there are (practically) no decent games being released for the system anymore.

Yeah.

Slow and painful.  It's doing well in Japan hardware and software wise right now, but it's in shambles in the rest of the world.  I think PSP2 will be announced this year at E3.

Well ,theres some good games coming:

Kingdom Hearts :DBS
Final Fantasy Dissidia
Monster Hunter 2nd G
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2
End War
Phantasy Star Online
Crazy Taxi III
Hitman(japanese one)
Buzz the Portable Quiz
Secret Agent Clank
Loco Roco 2
Macross Ace Frontier
Yggdra Union
Way of the Samurai
Star Wars:The Force Unleashed
Lego Batman
Madden 09
Tiger Woods 09
NBA Live 09
Naruto:Ultimate Ninja Heroes 2
Wall-E
Valhalla Knights 2
Pro Evolution Soccer 2009

Plus lots more.
The PSP isnt getting as much games as before(when it had a version of each PS2 game released) but it will keep having good games at least for one more year.Right now it has a greater catalogue than the DS (look at gamerankings in both games over 80% and over 70%) and it would be a surprise if it didnt end the generation still ahead. Its a real pity the PSP Slim didnt come earlier and that the console had such problems with piracy.

I agree wih the slow and painful death bit. It's kinda sad, but that's where it's headed right now as far as I can see..

You do realize the ds only needs 3 more games to beat the psp in over 80%averages of games, and 4 more games to beat it in 70% averagre ratings, and that should happen some time next month, with FFTA2 probably going to add 1 more this month, and then Fire Emblem, FFIV, and Disgaea Ds adding 3 more. I don't know if all of these will be in the 80s though, but its possible for 3 of them to reach that lvl.

@Op there will still be good games coming like Diomedes1976 posted, but it will slowly decrease. Also like DMJ said I believe psp 2 will be announced this year.

Personally, I would be shocked if the PSP made it to September 31st and was still ahead ... The Nintendo DS has 160+ games with solid release dates in 2008 (compared to 35 games for the PSP); even if only a small portion of these games turn out good, the DS will probably see more good game releases this year than the number of PSP games that are released.

I hope there is one reasonable RPG released this year. My PSP is collecting dust as we speak.

I recently got a PSP and I must admit that the games are definitely lacking in volumes compared to the DS. I am currently enjoying Jeanne d'Arc and FFVII:CC but besides that there really isn't anything else that interests me. Yes, I know there is GoW and Tactics but the system doesn't have the "Oomph" factor. I'm just waiting for the latest Kingdom Hearts and besides that there isn't anything else.

As far as PSP2 is concerned, I doubt Sony will announce anything about it this year. A slow and painful death like others on this thread has suggested seems like the most reasonable way to sum the life of the PSP. A system with so much potential yet with so little to offer. I'll just enjoy it for what it's worth.

It doesnt matter how much games the DS releases ,nearly all of them are mediocre or very bad.For a machine that is getting such strong sales (more than 70 million ) and so much software support to have only 3 titles over 90% and being beaten by the PSP in games over 80% and 70% is a total shame.

Do you realize that for the DS being close to the PSP library in games over 80% we have to accept 3 different versions of Nintendogs ,3 version of Pokemon and all the Brain Training games ?Do you realize if we lower the amount of reviews needed to chart in gamerankings from 20 to 10 the difference is even bigger in the PSP favour?

THe PSP library just owns the DS on catalogue. And most of the games I just posted as Loco Roco 2 ,Final Fantasy Dissidia or Kingdom Hearts will be very solid titles so the run of the PSP is far from over.
