Even the article you linked to had this to say about the "hack" (its not really a hack though):
"It runs quite well, and many of the differences have disappeared! It seems that the inability to select very high graphics levels under the DX9 mode is an artificial limitation put into the game by the developers. We still see some lighting and slight shadow differences, but the "God rays" and rendering distances are now the same."
The lighting and shadow changes are debatable as to which is actually better. In the first example the darkness of the sky and shadows on the ground is the major difference they point out but you can also see some loss in detail on the ground in DX10 mode, particularly the ground between the gun and the bush on the lower portion of the screen. Also the depth of field example with the gun sight shows that the DX10 version actually is detrimental to this effect as it removes the blurring effect almost entirely...I'm not sure that it is there at all actually. The only benefit appears to be the underwater light refraction on the trees which is minor to say the least.
