More Christian converts to face court in Algeria
ALGIERS (AFP) - Two Algerian converts to Christianity were due to appear before an Algerian criminal court on Wednesday accused of proselytizing, said head of the country's Protestant church Mustapha Krim.
"The trial has been confirmed for Wednesday," Krim told AFP, adding that the hearing would take place at Tissemsilt, 350 kilometres (220 miles) south-west of Algiers.
The two converts were each sentenced in their absence last November to two years in jail and a 5,000-euro (7,700-dollar) fine for illegally practising a non-Muslim religion.
They have asked to be sentenced again in their presence, as permitted by Algerian law.
The prosecution is the third to be brought against Christian converts in the mostly Muslim country.
The government in February 2006 passed a controversial law that requires non-Muslim congregations to seek permits from regional authorities.
