Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft shoots themselves in the foot with Halo 3

Does anybody have any data that Blu-Ray actually adds so much to the PS3's cost, I personally don't believe it adds so much. Maybe when it was launched, but not now productions cost for Blu-Ray is lower (ie stand-alone player costs are now lower).

I said that as that seems to be one of the main arguemtnets in this thread that Blu-Ray for certain adds $200 to the cost.

I don't think anyone would argue that a BR reader adds $200, but its among one of the things that adds "$200" to the price.

Of course, the fact is, the PS3 cost $700-800 @ launch. Blu-Ray, I'd assume is "required" for optimizing "the vast power of the PS3"

IMO, from what I've seen, with recent major cuts in diode costs, a Blu-Ray reader is around $50-$75 more per unit than a similar-speed DVD player.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

He said he'd rather have a $400 console with DVD than a $600 one with Blu-ray. What's so deluded about that? I'm sure almost all of us would take BR over DVD if they costed the same, but it definitely takes a great deal of fanboy delusion to want to pay $200 just to not have to change discs every 10 hours.

hehe, good luck with the disc swapping in World of Warcraft mate ;)
It would be really nice to have to swap discs everytime you hearthstone or get summoned from one place to another..

PS! I hope you know that you actually need to install this game?

I'd rather pay $600 and get a Blu-ray player, DVD upscaling, harddisk and a media center, than paying 200$ for a Wii and play Mario.

From the chart you can see that the PS3 and X360 have sold almost excactly at the same rate. Om VGChartz.com choose "World-> Compare Consoles" choose Align Launches. The PS3 and X360 overlap all the way. So where is the crisis and what did Sony do wrong that MS didn't. And why then has the PS3 sold just as good as the X360 in the same amount of time??

Sony's problem is precisely that you have to "align launches" to see them being similar. Right now, the PS3 is selling extremely bad, AND it has a sales gap to overcome. There's no way you can spin that to make it look good.

It will sell "bad" like you say until new content arrives, come september the PS3 may see a very pronounced upswing in sales.

I think you spin it worse than it is. This console's been out for like 2 months in Europe and it's sold 1 million consoles. Try putting a bad spin on that.

OK, I'll try:

1- No, it didn't sell 1 million consoles in Europe, it sold about 1 million consoles in the PAL region which includes Europe.

2- In that same region, it's currently selling about 75% of what the 360 is selling, and about 26% of what the Wii is selling, despite still having an enormous gap to catch up with those consoles. You're right when you say that soon-to-be-launched games will have a positive impact on it, but the competition also has them. Sony simply has to accept the fact that it is damn hard to sell a 600 € console.

Does that seem bad enough to you?

Well, the cost of the Blu-ray laser was recently cut by $100.  I belive it still adds $80 to the system, plus any additional associated costs.  (This is an estimate) I think that Sony was more concerned with hardware shortages, at the time, then costs.  If the PS3 comes down to $400 before next holiday season, it may be enough to save the American market.  The question is, will Sony be willing to continue losing money on consoles?  And for how long?

As for Halo 3, I'm the type that might be willing to pay more money to not have to switch discs.  But I'm not sure I would pay $200 more.   I also think that a bigger mistake for Microsoft was not including a HD on every system.  This would elimintate the need for multiple discs.  The could compress it much further if they could use the HD to decompress.  I almost think that they could get another 1-2 year out of the lifecycle if they did.

@NJ5

So basically you're saying that if Sony doesn't catch up fast they're doomed, they need to sell something like 14 mill to be ok before end of year? or??

It's not enough to have an installed base of, say 6-7 million consoles after 1 year jap/us sales and only 7 months rest of the world worth of sales.

I think you guys are blowing this shit out of proportion, maybe because you hope so much that the PS3 won't be able to compete with the Wii/360.

Tell me in the holliday season 2008 how the three consoles are doing, if the PS3 is far behind at that point, then I'll believe your doomsday prophecies.
