Forums - Sony - Sony sells 1 million consoles in Europe quicker than MS

So I know there is a thread about this before, but I found sources that are confirming this:

http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3160164

http://kotaku.com/gaming/like-a-million-hotcakes/sony-sells-a-million-pal-ps3s-267167.php

Does this rest those doubts yet that it's consoles sold and not shipped?

Also, wanted to point out PS3 selling quicker than 360 in Europe despite being significantly more expensive.

Personally, I'd like to know where Sony got the '1 million' number from. They never specifically name a survey company (like ChartTrack) and I've been told (repeatedly) that manufacturers themselves do not have access to 'real time' sales numbers - so who's the source???

How do we know this guy didn't just hop onto VGChartz, round up the total on the front page and claim 'teh million sold!!!!'???

...and I'm being very serious here - I'm not trying to be a smartass. With Sony's streak of PR blunders, I'm just curious to see an official reference for these numbers, and I'm not finding it.

Did you read the 1up article? It says from the data they have available so it isn't just some guy saying 'we just sold the million'.

...which comes from where exactly? They cite the sources for 360 numbers, but the PS3 numbers just come from this piece of SONY PR - http://www.mcvuk.com/opinion/32/The-PS3-powers-on.

It also fails to point out that the 360 had a worldwide launch and a console shortage for much of its first 12 weeks, which kept them from selling at a faster rate.

This looks to me like cherry picking data in order to get SONY a drop of good press.

It mentions that in the kotaku article, why do you need to mention that when everyone knows that ?

Does that change the facts?

Yes - I read the article - several times. And still, I don't see where they are getting 'the data'. So, that leaves us with two options:

1) They have access to actual 'sell through' data, which means they pick and choose when to release that information (and therefore, lie to us when they try to pass off 'shipped' numbers as 'sold' as they do the rest of the time)

2) They are making 'estimations'.

Which one is it???

Again - not being a smartass here. Trying to get down to the truth of this, that's all...

So you think these sources are not credible then and they are just making shit up for the good of Sony...

Assuming our numbers are spot on correct and they're lying/mistaking, or assuming they're right and we're wrong, it's still only a 5% error in any case. Now I'm not an expert on this, but that sounds like a very good margin to me. Of course they're making it sound better than it is and probably rounding up quite liberally, but even our very own ioi has had to reduce the Wii numbers several times due to being too optimistic. We're all only human after all, so quit making a lot of fuss about nothing.

Can anyone tell me how long it took for the other two consoles to hit a million in Europe? Seems very odd that a console that's selling under 20k a month supposedly hit a million faster than any other before.

The significant point is that they sold 1 million before 360 did in Europe despite the price difference.
