I've always wondered how nothing can be made from something. I believe in evolution but i always believed in some supernatural being that started it.

1. The total energy of the universe, according to some theories, sums to zero. The positive mass-energy of all particles is exactly balanced by the negative gravitational energy of everything acting on everything else.

2. If there was net zero energy beforehand, a spontaneous fluctuation in the vacuum (see uncertainty principle) could have created the structure of the universe by borrowing energy for a short time. Once this was done, the net energy of the universe would still be zero so the principle of the conservation of energy would not be violated.

3. If there was an infinite 'time' before the beginning of the universe where nothing happened, the probablity of this universe appearing as a vacuum fluctuation is 1 (i.e. certain).

So, no supernatural intervention is needed to explain the creation or maintenence of the universe.
