Forums - PC Discussion - In the theme of PC builds - My first home theatre machine, $293 U.S

I just ordered the parts last night and heres what im getting.

Lian li matx Case+PSU

Athlon X2 5600+

GIGABYTE MA78GM-S2H AMD 780G - Audio over HDMI rocks!

Windows Vista premium 64bit.

The above is $293

Then when im good and ready, like in a few months time im thinking of putting in a $100 graphics card like the 3870, so I will have PS3 beating performance for $390! Pretty good deal huh?

Im stealing a gb of ram from my main machine and a spare 250gb IDE HDD and an old DVD rom drive. This is ultra cheap.

I'll put some pictures up when I get it all assembled.

You think I could make a rig that cheap in the UK ? i'm looking to make a PC that is roughly the same power as an XBOX 360.

I can't fault the parts list for an HTPC. The 780G has the best integrated graphics ever produced and will handle any sort of HD video, the processor is just right for your needs and the price is very good.

Im not sure, it depends on what parts/software you need, I had some old ram and a HDD/Optical drive lying around.

@Soleron the motherboard was one of the few ones that came with HDMI and 8 chanel audio built in. From the spec sheet its an awesome design, and its an awesome price too. Just $85. I could have gotten away with just sticking a single core athlon into it, since im not encoding video... I just couldn't bring myself to do it!

Could make a second one exactly like that and sell it to me?

I'd go with 2gb of ram if you're rockin' vista premium.

Total: $417 for a media centre. (You can of course cheapen out if you have an old machine you can scavange parts off like I did!!) Or if you have a retail version of Xp you don't need to pay for vista and you save $100 right there.

For a games machine.

Double the ram to 4gb.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161218 $130 - Radeon 3870 with dual slot cooling to go with the high quality.

Price: $625 with 4gb ram, Vista, high quality components etc.

@Ion storm. Im cutting my Vista install to bits on my Media centre build. I should be able to get it running lighter than a vanilla XP install.
