The wii has DOUBLE the hardware base of the PS3
Brawl will trounce it
Thats not to say MGS4 wont be a big hit but...you could have picked a more reasonable opponent |
Brawl would trounce it regardless of userbase. The Smash Bros series just has way more appeal in America and Japan than Metal Gear Solid will ever have. |
Though ironically MGS1 outside SSB and MGS2 outsold SSBM each by about a million. The Konami hype machine can do wonders and is much more powerful than the hype Nintendo builds for their games. MGS4's budget has already surpassed 80 million, it would be expected that they will push this game VERY heavily. |
I'm looking at Vgchartz's figures and they say differently. The Metal Gear series has actually been decreasing in popularity (although it could be boosted by its latest iteration) whereas the Smash Bros series has been rising with each new title released. |
VGchartz has incorrect sales data on MGS. Every major source including publications and Konami themselves has MGS1 at 6+ million and MGS2 at 7+ million,. |
Every Smash game has had a way better attach rate than every MGS game, point blank. The original sold nearly the same as MGS (I think those sales you're referring to include the PC version) and Melee sold better than 2 or 3 on a much smaller install base and the MGS titles had multiple ps2 versions and were released for multiple platforms. Smash games are growing in popularity and MG games are shrinking(though I think MGS4 has potential to eclipse it's predecessors).
When you take that into account, with the install base of the PS3 and the Wii, it doesn't even seem debatable. Just look how quickly Brawl has sold, compared to Melee and what the attach rate would have to be MGS4 to surpass it.
