Forums - Sony - No price cut for PS3 this year?

A $100 price cut in 2008 would seriously harm any chance of the console ever turning a profit.

I think this sentence is a pretty strong and unsubstantiated statement. 100$ may seem like a lot of money but every additional console sold means more games, more accessories etc. sold. Most people buy at least a second controller, a couple of games ( 9 for the PS2 I think), perhaps a Playstation Eye, some online games, a few BluRay discs etc. pp.
So the question is: Whats bigger: The number of PS3s they sell times 100$ or the longterm profit of the additionally sold PS3s.

In the end it doesn't matter when the 360 drops the price they have to follow. At the moment they sell quite healthily but they cannot afford to fall back.

I still remember a similar discussion I had with someone 2007. He said Sony would never drop the price before christmas but would wait till April 2008. They couldn't afford it, nobody would drop a price for christmas etc. pp. Two months later the 40Gb was shown for 400$. Besides producing computers gets LOTs cheaper in two years.

It would harm their chance of ever turning a profit on the console. Sony can't afford to go 2 1/2 fiscal years with huge losses and expect the console to make all that back in the last 3 1/2 years. MS has taken that strategy with their consoles and there's only a hope that the 360 will come out profit neutral when all is said and done. That's a shitty business strategy and Sony knows it.

Sure, they'll sell more games, accessories, etc. but $100 is a lot of games when you're only pulling in ~$10 per third party game.

I agree with you that there won't be a price drop, but MS isn't losing any money at all their making the most in software sales(highest attach rate) XBL and the fact that the 360 manufacturing costs went down. There was actually a recent news story on how the 360 is making them a bundle, so Sony isn't following MS 360 plan because the 360 is making a fortune. I would say that Sony is more along the lines following the Xbox 1 plans. MS couldn't afford a price drop, but they still did it because of Sony.

They are making a reasonable amount of money right now and the Weak USD probably is why they didn't drop the price. Snoy wants to wait a bit longer before a price cut having said the release of GTA4.

Well, if losing $280 Million dollars last quarter = making a reasonable amount of money, then I don't want you for an accountant.

And that is the loss after including all of the profit from the PS2, PSP, and all the software on all 3 systems.  This tells us that the PS3 hardware is still losing a HUGE amount of money.

Or it means the Ps2/Psp arent as profitable as most assume/speculate... or it could mean that they are spending money on R&D for a slim Ps3 model...

Or it could mean you DONT KNOW WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON IN THE INNER WORKINGS OF SONY!

I love people who spout assumptions and speculations as facts.

I'll spout whatever I want, that's why its called a FORUM.

You can believe whatever you want, but I'll try to stick to a logical analysis.  Your going to tell me the PS2 has suddenly gotten less profitable?  Yeah, that realistic.

At the least, Sony will make the PS3 appear cheaper by offering a 80gig bundle with a game, (possibly vastly increased shipments of MGS4 bundle) for Christmas for $400. They will then introduce a new model to supplant the $500 price point sku.

Is that a price cut? I say so. But some might disagree.

More importantly, what will be shown by Sony at E3. Video/music download store finally up and running?

Why would they cut the price when they were already more or less forced to do so before? They started out making a loss on the machine, even at the $600 price point, then they dropped the price, losing even more money, so why would they now drop the price even more, to lose more money yet again? PS3's selling okay, not really terrific, but they're managing. I can't see Sony slash their prices even further within the forseeable future.

Uh... how profitable the Ps2 and PSP was all speculation to begin with. Youre speculating on speculation. And the fact remains. You dont know what the fuck is going on with Sony. You can assume your explination is reasonable but that doesnt change the fact you are assuming.

How profitable the PS2 has been is far from speculation.  Look at the Sony game division profits from 2002-2006.  You have another reason for this other than the PS2.  Is this too logical for you to understand?

It's not speculation? Okay give me a breakdown of P&L of the Sony Corporation over the last decade. I want you to show me all of Sony's spendings and on what the spent their money on and how much their investment returned to them on each piece of HW and SW.

Perhaps they want to keep a low profile to surprise attack MS. And even if they didn't think it, they almost certainly don't want to make MS know their strategy until last moment, as they saw that despite huge improvements compared to their first try with XBox 1, MS hasn't grasped yet all the mechanics of console market.
