Forums - Sales Discussion - The Official NPD April 2008 Thread

One week = 5 days for the GTA IV annoucement. GTA IV, according to Take 2, sold 6m in 5 days. NPD doesn't really add up with that at all, since Americas > Europe for GTA - especially when you look at relative install bases (15m vs 10m).

Very very strange data. I am not going to sit here and criticise since that would be unprofessional but I really struggle to correlate anything with the data we have or with common logic, last months sales, year on year or anything else.

Odd.

Good point out,

I would believe the publisher (take2) over the NPD data,

The numbers just don't add up.

Consoles LTD, end 2009, end 2010 - prediction

I realize you're banned and can't respond but ...

I don't think that it is realistic to expect Sony and Microsoft to completely copy Nintendo's approach with this generation, and for developers and publishers to react towards their systems as they have with the Wii today. I do expect less expensive systems with more modest hardware; this isn't to say that the next generation will be taken to the extreme that the Wii was, and I believe Sony and Microsoft will aim for the most powerful (reliable) hardware that can be manufactured and sold for (roughly) $300 without taking massive losses. I do expect a move towards Wiimote-like controllers, but I expect that they will be improved in order to fix most of the Wiimote's limitations and to be more effective in core-gamer genres.

Honestly I see nothing horrible about the future you described.  They can still push graphics past this gen without spending $600 on a system.  People remember the PS3 launch but forget the 360 launched with a $300 core SKU!!!  And the PS3 probably could have been under $400 if it didn't use BR since they had a $500 SKU with BR.  And the wiimote doesn't have to be used for "crappy minigames" as some people put it.  Shovelware devs just do that because of the low cost of developing Wii games and high userbase, not the controls.  So a PS4 next gen with an improved and refined wiimote like device at around $300-$350 sounds extremely tempting to me.

Has NPD come in yet? Can someone re-post here for me as the Wii browser won't display full forum pages.
Wii: 714.2k
360: 188.0k
PS3: 187.1k
PS2: 124.4k

DS: 414.8k
PSP: 192.7k

WTF! I can't remember specific numbers but isn't the PS360 weekly average almost the same as March (or even less?) I know there was only 1 week of GTA but it is usually launch heavy so I figured any hardware boost would be too. Are there any software numbers yet?

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2 (Xbox 360) 103,500

God of War: Chains of Olympus (PSP) 64,000

It's just the fact that the guy seems to have so much personal anger! I hope he's going to E3

And it used to be driley before it was changed.

About GTA IV - believe me, 950k in the UK puts Europe well under 2.5m - our Euro stuff is pretty accurate. It would definitely be closer to 5m than 6m if you use this NPD data, which is about 1m (combined) too low in my opinion.

Also, the SSBB dropoff is pretty crazy. 2.7m (1.4m week one says Nintendo) to 300k?

I can't escape the feeling that they massage numbers to fix previous inaccuracies - I guess now that everything is more public it is harder to post-adjust data without looking silly. Amazes me that every analyst, prediction, all retail reports, anecdotal information agrees with our data and yet NPDs is totally different! Wouldn't suprise me if next month their PS3 and 360 sales are 100k larger than ours

But anyway, I don't want to get into this.

Ya, I agree. I wouldn't be shocked at all. Just don't adjust our numbers. Our numbers are fine.

Wow ,this is bad.

I can get the Wii selling like mad.Its something "fresh" ,it attracts casual gamers of all ages and sex...

...what I dont get is how the PS3 and the 360 doesnt manage at least some 280K units monthly ...188K is really low.I think its even worse for the 360 that is in its 3rd year in the market and outside Halo3 release hasnt managed ever to pull ahead. And PS3 I dont know what happens...it has had good games this month and Sony reported a strong increase in PS3 sales due to GTAIV and it sells a lot less that last month.Unconceivable.

Wow, what ownage. No way I saw this coming.

Look out for next month, its going to be the BIG one for the Wii...

Well this pretty much confirms there won't be a big leap from this gen to the next and all 3 consoles will be cheaply priced casual friendly wagglefests.

Time to move to PC gaming after this generation.

I guess I'm one of those "hardcore" gamers that the Wii fanboys like to make fun of so much. They'll just have to excuse me for wanting more out of my games than anything the Wii offers at this time (and no, I'm not talking about graphics you one-note assholes).
