Report: Xbox 360 to get new graphics card this summer

Xbox 360 Red Ring still got you down? A new report released late Thursday suggests that Microsoft is working on a second internal optimization to reduce overheating and mitigate the abnormal number of system failures once and for all.

The new graphics processor, code-named Jasper, is said to run cooler and reduce overheating, which is commonly blamed for the high number of Xbox 360 system failures. The GPU is expected in retail units by late summer, according to Daily Tech.

It wouldn't be the first time Microsoft has modified the innards of its popular console to reduce failures. In 2007, the company introduced a cooler-running CPU, dubbed Falcon, which seemingly reduced the number of Red Ring of Death occurrences, though reports of widespread failures remain.

In July 2007, Microsoft apologized for "an unacceptable number of repairs," after it was estimated that nearly 33 percent of all Xbox 360 units fail. The company increased the Xbox 360 warranty to three years as a result.

So late Summer, that means new model 360 will be out by August 2008.

Oh good lord? This is only a good thing. The introduction of the Elite and the falcon chipset integrated into other 360's has already has a positive impact on the number of RROD's occuring. While the failures haven't been eliminated completely (which may very well be impossible), the number has definitely been reduced somewhat.

Let's not forget how many internal changes the PS2 went through, the 360 isn't THAT bad yet!

Microsoft is a software company. Regular upgrades are expected.

RROD reduced from 33% down to 10%. RROD occurrence in 360 models has been significantly reduced. So 10% down to below 5% would be further improvement in hardware.

Any failure rate above 2% or so is unacceptable. Infact, any failure rate at all is unacceptable.

You pay for a product, you don't expect it to break.
