Forums - Gaming - Beauty is skin deep: Calling out the graphics pimps

Jim Sterling, isn't this the same guy who was getting tongue-tied and mum at times while having a conversation with Jack Thompson?

Everybody likes good graphics, and most men that I know think Paris Hilton is pretty hot (though some disagree).

At the same time, some people have more on their mind than looks. To those, good graphics do not a game make, and we might actually turn down a date with Paris. (Well... maybe not....)

It happens everywhere and in every genre, and I don't want to over simplify things, but it tends to have to do with a person's intelligence (or perhaps wisdom).

Children eventually graduate from books with pictures to those without; the smarter can make this transition more quickly. There are those movie-goers who can't see past special effects, and those that can (and some who don't mind when a film is in black and white). The ability to imagine, and abstract, enable some to get past the surface of things... but there are others who lack in those abilities.

This is a wild presumption on my part, but I would guess that the same people who consider graphics the most important aspect in video games, are usually uncomfortable with black & white movies and are drawn to looks over all else in dating. I would guess that they don't read much, and generally skew on the younger side of gamers.

This has nothing really to do with "the console wars" -- there are all kinds in every camp -- but is a general trait. Some people can see past the surface and some can't. "Graphics whores" are how 'those who can't' show up in video games. That's it.

Dude, I think I would get herpes just from being within 20 feet of Paris Hilton.  She is everything that isn't hot.

paris hilton hot? angelina jolie hot? yeah suuuuuuure

back on topic donathos that was a good analogy

Paris Hilton is a skank. Enough said. But neither Paris or Angelina has nothing to do regarding video games.

Crysis had great visuals but the gameplay was well dull. COD 4 had  lot better gameplay than Crysis and the visuals in COD 4 were amazing in HD.

Engh, its what everyone has been saying since day one this generation.

I think games like GTA, Guitar Hero and Rockband prove that graphics are purely supplemental. If only developers would get the memo.

Agreed those three games prove that gameplay is more than just flashy graphics.

Where do you find someone to play you in Go Bod? I've got two boards and have played about as many games of it. Never can find anyone who wants to sit down and play... considering how long it tkaes.

Good Graphics + Bad Gameplay = No

Bad Graphics + Good Gameplay = No

Whats wrong with bad graphics and good gameplay?

I don't understand people who can't stand games with graphics that from a technical, or even an asthetic, standpoint are terrible.

I mean games such as Civilization, Ocarina of Time, Pong, Tetris, Rogue, FFVI, Chrono Trigger, Links Awakening, SMB3, SM64, Starcraft, Metroid, Warcraft II, those are fucking amazing games. All of which fall so far short of our current graphical standards (especially rogue) that its not even funny. I really, honestly, don't consider you a gamer if you can't enjoy at least half of the listed games.

According to preview, KZ2 gameplay is solid, classic, good BUT not innovative

You see, Destructoid, just read some preview before making useless article.

We can also talk about innovation in FPS, but since, there is about NOTHING new since 10 years ...

Time to Work !
