I don't know if it works in the UK, but I bought it through SonyStyle. If you sign up for their credit card, you get $100 off. So I got a 40GB for $300.

my local blockbusters sell preowned 40Gb PS3 for £229.00 and I think thats a generic price all Blockbusters sell pre-owned 40gb's for- they come with 3 month guarantee which should be long enough to check out it works.

May be worth looking into how much i would cost to send to Sony to get repaired if it broke though - may still even be free, who knows?
