Sony 'firmly believes' in PS3 Home launch this fall

Despite ongoing delays, PlayStation president Kaz Hirai is confident his PS3 answer to Xbox Live Achievements will launch this fall.

Sony is optimistic that home will in fact launch this fall

"I said at the Tokyo Game Show [last year] that I would not open up Home until I was completely happy with it, and I still stand by that statement," Hirai said in his PlayStation Day keynote on Tuesday.

"We have been testing Home for some time and I simply feel that, as great as it currently is, it needs a little bit more time before it is ready for the wider public, something we firmly believe we can provide in the autumn."

Two weeks ago, Sony delayed PlayStation Home for a second time, and then only as an open beta test. It's unclear if Hirai was referring to the open beta in his statement today, or if the company is in fact planning for a final release this fall.

In addition to detailing several PS3 games, European PlayStation head David Reeves reported that total PS3 sales have surpassed Xbox 360 sales in Europe, despite the former launching 16 months after Microsoft's console. The PS3 still trails both Wii and Xbox 360 worldwide, however.

In any case, Reeves remained upbeat, calling today's announcements just the tip of the iceburg. "The future we believe is looking very bright for PlayStation," he said.

Ooooh, that would make an interesting turn of events anyway!

I would hope that if he does mean the full Home download, then the public beta would be released earlier :D

Christmas is looking really good for the PS3 :) yum

The future is looking bright for the PS3, too bad HOME has nothing to do with it...

Honestly, does any gamer out there really care about HOME anymore and will use HOME as if it were second life? I'd be interested to know, because I doubt this'll be the thing that tips the scales on the 360 and Wii.

I will use Home just for the online aspects of games and the Trophies etc, but i won't be using it in any way like the people who use second life... I actually have a real life lol :D

Will all ps3 games have achievments now like the 360 games?

Obviously the new ones will , but will the devs add achievments to older games such as Resistance 1?

Yes sorry, forgot we're not allowed to have opinions. my bad

Thats like saying, does anyone really care about XBLive?

I, and im sure thousands more are very much looking forward to Home, something new different and competitive to XBLive...

Obviously this won't tip the scale of the 360 and Wii, no one said this... I simply said the future is looking good for the PS3, Home, and all the other recent news about the PS3 the past couple days (and months)...

So I guess to answer your question, yes.

lol, i love the quotes around "firmly believes" in the title.

It may not be trophies (or whatever the hell they're going to be called with Home), but Resistance and Ratchet and Clank: Future both have special achivement-esque things that you unlock as you do things in the game, like killing numerous Chimera with a grenade in a certain level for example.l
