So I played through the demo as the girl character (you can choose either) Ellen.
Few things that should be mentioned:
Positive:
1. The presentation is amazing:
game looks amazing (Everything from environment to most of the creatures and characters).
The audio is spot on. Music is really good from title screen to battle music to music in the tavern in town. Sound is also very good, but there were no voices merely text during dialogue. I'm assuming that is place holder stuff and that the game will have voice acting when it's released in Japan and if not in that version then for sure in the US version (as we heard voices when watching the footage from gamer's day).
2. Very cool style to the game, the locations in town had a very gothic feeling, like something out of a horror movie or something. It seems to be set in a small English town in the early part of the 20th century (old cars and clothes). The wilderness locations look even better with stunningly colorful areas with lots of plants and all kinds of lighting and effects that really make you appreciate how good this game looks even for a next gen game.
Things really get crazy when you are fighting multiple enemies at the same time and using abilites consecutively while pulling souls of creatures and stuff, it all looks amazing visually.
3. Cutscenes are unique in that they are presented in comic book like form, except they are game animations in boxes with text bubbles (hoping the audio will be added later before US version comes out).
4. Soul sucking move after you dispatch an enemy works really well with the sixaxis as you pull it towards you to pull the soul towards you in game. The only annoying part was getting the hang of sucking the soul of this bigger creature (believe it was a mini boss), but then I got it.
Negative:
1. Fixed camera during exploration, but you have camera control when you go into the wilderness areas where combat happens.
2. Combat system seemed basic at the beginning of the game. Really all you do is use the creatures whose souls you collect and hotkey them to one of the 4 buttons (triangle,circle...) and unleash them on enemies. Combat is limited to creature use, but I assume when you have dozens and dozens of creatures to use later on you'll have a lot more options (I had only 5 creatures to use total).
3. Demo had too much story stuff in it I thought (especially since it was all in Japanese) and not enough of the fighting which took a little while to come along.
4. This one's obvious, I couldn't tell anything of the story as I don't read Japanese lol
All in all, my assessment of the game so far is that the presentation is genuinely fantastic, except it definitely needs voice acting for the US release (or full game release in Japan eitherway) and it was not a disappointment in that I can see the potential of the game getting more and more interesting with more abilities and enemies involved later. Really great music and atmosphere.
I don't think it will be a big hit in Japan for one specific reason in that it's not your old school RPG game, it's not turn based RPG and can be described more as action RPG a la Kameo maybe or something of that sort. The creature collection aspect should appeal to Japanese consumers though.
I will definitely check this game out when it hits stateside, it could end up something really special. Gonna play the demo as the male character tomorrow cause I'm pretty tired now. I'll check if that changes gameplay a lot or not.
