Forums - Gaming - quick question about HDMI cables

if it is just ONE game- it is not the cable.

that said all the overpriced HDMI cables are just that OVERPRICED

goto monoprice.com or bluejeanscable.com(slightly more expensive than monoprice-but the guy running it is really knowledgable) for cables as good as the cables that cost 100-200 dollars...for 10 to 20 dollars.

and YES there IS a difference between spec's.

a cable rated for 1.0 MAY not work for 1.3 profile hdmi so make sure you get profile 1.3 hdmi rated cables.

HDMI is a digital transfer method which includes automatic error correction, so a cable has to be extremely long and/or crappy in order to distort the signal.

Bottom line - go cheap on HDMI cables.

you don't need to buy the "official" really expensive HDMI cables to get the best experience right?

That's the nice thing about digital technology. Either it works or not. If you do not need a very long cable every cable will do.

With digital signals, such as via HDMI cables, you either get the signal from A to B or not at all. There is no fuzzy in between like analog cables.

Buy your cables here:

You will get a GOOD HDMI cable for 5 bucks. The only thing you need to worry about with digital is interference. It has to be a lot of it too, so if you are running a long cable at a rock concert over 50 PA cables, then you care about good shielding. If you using it at home, nothing should cause any problems.

It’s sending 1’s and 0’s down the cable. If they all get there in the same order, it does not matter how you sent it.

Home Cinema magazines say the claim that all HDMI cables are the same is rubbish. It might just be that the expensive cable makers incenticise them to make such claims. I have heard elsewhere that there is no difference in cables up to 5m but anything over 5m and you need an expensive cable.

The difference between cheap cables and expensive ones is the shielding..so if you have a lot of electronics go expensive. I have had some problems with cheaps ones before. Expensive cables will give you a better picture for longer cables because they lower distortion...really thought expensive cables are for video and audiophiles
No. That may be the case with analog cables, but not digital ones. Just ask the video/audiophiles @ avsforum.com.

@nextgreatchamp: There is zero possibility that your HDMI cable is causing your problems with just one game. If it was a problem with the cable, like a broken connector or something, everything would be affected, not just one specific game. It is either your TV or your console.

This is the key. We're talking about a digital cable. You're either getting the signal or you're not. It's not like an analog cable (say, component) where quality can degrade but you still get a signal. Your box is either getting that string of binary or it's not... There's no middle ground, making "quality" (aka. expensive) cables virtually worthless unless you're stringing it across your entire house.

No; this is a lie perpetuated by the marketing folks at monster cable. All HDMI cables are created equal. The difference between 1.0 and 1.3 is in the source and receiving devices, not the cable itself.

@tuoyo: I wouldn't doubt that there is a lot of money passed around to keep the myth of "high quality digital cables are worth the price difference" alive.

If Home Cinema magazine claimed the cheaper cables were as effective as the expensive brand, the expensive brand would pull their advertising dollars.

This is why the advertising/reviewing dynamic of publications is so flawed.

there is no difference in quality between a cheap HDMI cable and an expensive one. However, my cheap ($15) kicked the bucket after about 6 months, so I spent $40 on the "official" Playstation 3 cable and have had no problems whatsoever with that one and have had it for almost a year.
