Current tech allows for a better cinematic flow for many games, you could chalk it up to raw power (graphics) but it definitely adds to the gameplay something more than just "make it look pretty". Next-gen also helps improve on physics, better AI, better framerate, better draw-distance. There are tons of things going on many of today's games that are not simply a result of "more polys, HDR, HD textures, better particle effects". |
Xbox Live on Xbox offered the online portion you just mentioned last generation. Better framerates? No. That will never be a next gen feature. Frame rates are a balancing act developers will always fight with. For example, we've had 60 fps games since the N64/PS1 days yet not even half the PS3 games run at 60 fps. Ironically, more Wii titles run at 60 fps than PS3 titles but as I mentioned, this is not exactly realtive to raw horsepower. |
Difference between what MS offered online last gen and what they offer this gen is substantial. ps360 don't always offer next gen gameplay but games can be found where this is true.
Here are a few things that I found "next gen" on the 360...
In Ikaruga (old game) you can go and save replays and then people can download your replays. I downloaded the replay of the best ranked player on xbox live and he gave 300 ideas on how to fight bosses and such...this I find very next gen as it eliminated the need for guides.
More people online. Halo 3 has 4 player co-op mode where you can play the campaign. Frontlines:fuel of war has 50 player online death match mode. This was not possible before and is hella fun.
Rock Band - everything about the game is next gen.
Also there is the case of AI and game environments. Things are more destructible these days than before and that plays part of the gameplay. Enemy AI tends to be a lot smarter in some games which ads depth to playing the game. Playing on very hard these days is no longer an impossible task of sheer luck.
Online - downloading demos, game movies, podcasts, songs, movies. All this was not possible before 2005 on any network(legally)...let alon on a console.
To be honest, I don't find Wii to be next gen at all. I mean, controls can be inventive(sometimes) but once you get used to them(usually within the first hour of playing the game) its back to playing the same old Zelda and same old last gen ports and upgraded sequels. I would call wii sports next gen...but since then all the games like that have just copied wii-sports and all the normal games have really added nothing new gameplay wise. If you think shaking the wii more is next gen...power to you.
So wii - not next gen(gameplay or visuals)
ps360 - next gen visuals, sometimes next gen gameplay.
Winner - ps360 :)
