Forums - Gaming - Video Game Reviewing

Okay, so I am going all out, making video game reviews, like the Angry Video Game Nerd, but I'm trying not be another amateurish copy-cat. Now, don't try to talk me out of it. I'm not going to be, like the iRate Gamer, whom I personally, don't think is that much of a rip off, except in his TMNT one, when he said "shit load of fuck." You could say, that I will be competing against the nerd, but in know way am I going to steal any of his work, and such. The nerd is the best, and always will be. But anyways, my goal is to review games, of today, with a similar, yet different, style, from the AVGN. For example, I am currently reviewing Sonic the Hedgehog for the PS3, because not a single review out there, has satisfied me enough, for that game. There are far too many flaws, that have gone unnoticed, my I am going to show the world, what these flaws are, and I am hoping that it's going to be funny. Sure, I might crash and burn, but by at least, attempting, already puts me ahead of 6 billion people, so that's okay with me.

If it ends up being like garbage, I will simply start over. Now, I have no history, in video editing, and filming, but I am learning. I have Final Cut Pro, and I'm getting very used to it. Writing the script was a nightmare at first, because I constantly constrained it, for perfection, and it ended up being very choppy, and I was very displeased with it, so I redid everything, including wiping out the entire project, and starting from scratch. At first, it seemed to be one of the hardest things, ever to do. I'm not going to film the T.V. screen, with a crooked camera, in dim, fuzzy light, with sounds, muffling in the background. No. I have all the equipment needed, to stream high quality, video game footage, from the console, to the video camera, to the laptop, without even needing the T.V. I play the game, looking at the screen, in the camera. Funny thing is, I don't even know how to put the T.V. in the middle, yet.

I already have the tripod, and everything. Capturing video game footage is also, not easy. Sometimes, you don't go through a glitch, properly, so you have to go through it again, but sometimes, finding that same glitch is hard, and the camera is recording everything, so eventually, when I go through a glitch, the right way, I have to sift through minutes of footage, that take up a lot of memory on my computer. So many unforeseen problems, happen, and man, it was living hell at first, but now, things are better. I'm a perfectionist, so I have to focus the camera onto the game, because the footage itself, needs to be presentable, but it's a real pain, when the camera in the game, is so bad. One part, I purposely get stuck, on this hill, showing how bad the controls are, and an enemy flies right in the middle of the shot, ruining it, so I have to do it all over again. Even in real life, there are unforeseen problems. Like, the garbage can shot, which is going to be kept as a surprise, got ruined, because one of the games I threw in there, flipped up-side-down, or simply, on the side, and when it eventually landed flat, sunlit glare, blocked the cover, and I had to redo the entire shot, elsewhere. I have managed to go around, the millions of problems, but now, there is a new one.

I've already written the script, near perfection. Imperfection, is perfection, when writing the script. For example, if you eliminate all of the "now," "next" "even," "although," "perhaps," and other connecting words, that make the script fluid, then the script is too constrained, and you end up, reading it, as if you're a child, reading an unwanted, school project. So, I've written the script, and then I came across a new problem. Do I do my voice overs first, or, do I add the game footage first? What I think, is that I have to do the voice over first, because the talking part, has to be smooth, anyways, and that should be the easy part. The talking, is more important, than the footage. I can always edit the talking, and space certain parts out, to synchronies with the footage, so I recorded a random, 10 minute video game shot, and I'm doing the voice over first, then I am going to delete that random shot, and start putting the important shots, in between.

I still haven't figured out, how to lower the audio of the footage, so I don't have to yell. I'll probably do it, the way the Nerd did it, and have the music, and sound effects, chopped up, with the individual parts of footage, instead of having one, continues line of music, with no sound effects, because that seems to make sense. Then, after that, I'll include the shots of me talking, and doing stuff. But now, back to the voice overs. This is where I hit a brick wall. I bought this expensive head set, but there's a problem. You know those unwanted, mouth sounds... I don't know how to explain what they are... Not lisps... I don't know... But how do I eliminate those? Should you drink water, before? Should I also stand when I voice act, to get a better voice? Should I move the microphone away? But if I do that, then there's echo. I am using Final Cut Express. Is there a way, that I can perform, some kind of audio filter? What do I do?

Good luck with that, hope it all works out for ya,
