Forums - Gaming - HD vs. Wii: Fanboyism Run Rampant

I think bumping a well written and appropriate post is a good thing. I get annoyed at all the stark raving fanboys who predict doom and gloom for whatever system they dislike.

I have 3 points.

1) First, I'd like to say I think you chose a great title for this: "HD vs. Wii: Fanboyism Run Rampant." It doesn't just describe the current discussion, but it describes most reviewers as well. They have all grown into their jobs over the last few gaming generations of traditional gaming and are now freaking out and their fanboyism towards traditional gaming is running rampant. It's like they're scared of praising a new idea because they think they'll lose their jobs or something, so they have to praise the shinier same-old HARDER THAN EVER BEFORE. To say that GTA4 is a better game than GTA3 is not a hard stretch. But to say that GTA4 is revolutionizing the industry more than GTA3 is just total bullshit.

2) I disagree with this comment: "The Wii and HD consoles represent different facets of the video game industry. Personal opinion will put one above the other, the truth is they will both push video game technology and video game quality forward; both through innovation."

Upping the pixel count is not innovation. It happens every single generation and is expected and required, and has never not happened. It's not innovative. It's a direct result of technological advancements. Every system will be faster, stronger, smarter, and prettier than the last. That doesn't make them different. Besides, the strongest one never wins. Ever.

3) We're not supposed to bump anything ever. If you really want to bump something, you gotta disguise it with a new idea or angle so you add something to the conversation. Empty bumps are frowned upon, and should be looked at by a doctor.

The war will never end between the GTAIV fanboys and the wiifit fanboys since they are looking for totally different qualities in a video game.

GTA Fanboy: OMG GTA is amazing!!!11!!!!!!1! I can see the herpes on the hooker in such ridiculous detail! Best game ever!

Wiifit Fanboy: Wiifit is a new experience that is pushing the boundaries of gaming. I'm going to go do some yoga.

GTA Fanboy:  Wiifit is so gay, and its not a real game. I'm going to go run over a bunch of monks.

Wiifit Fanboy: GTA is the same old game with better graphics. All that matters is how fun a game is.

This will continue until the next Wii/HD big hitters come out. This debate is about as productive as republicans and democrats trying to agree on one candidate for president.

I think you have it all wrong, it's not the fanboys, it's the haters. I actually pre-ordered WiiFit long before GTA4. I bought a Wii to do nothing other then WiiFit.

GTA4 fans come out and say things like "I love this game more then any game I have ever played" Or "This is the best game ever". Then the GTA4 Haters bash it. It has nothing to do with WiiFit.

WiiFit fans say things like "The WiiFit is revolutionary, and is going to move console gaming in a new direction." and WiiFit haters say "It's just a bunch of mini-games". It has nothing to do with GTA4.

Why anyone puts down anything they didn't buy, is beyond me.

@1) This article has a big problem. I use Wii Fit and GTA4 to loosely support my main argument, but mainly to bring some other arguments in. I tried my best not to link the innovation thing too closely to Wii Fit and GTA4, because of the point you made.

@2) I concede to this, that was a logical oversight. That sentence would work without "both through innovation."

For argument sake, and in an attempt to discover what I was thinking, the current gen HD consoles could be looked at as innovative because this is the first generation we have the chance to attain near photorealism. Just as the PSX/N64 were innovative in that they allowed 3D graphics to become mainstream. It's not the "upping pixels" but the visual paradigms that are made possible.

@3) Thanks for the heads up... my future bumps will be incognito.

Well the Wii vs. PS360 debate is like Burgers vs. Pizza debate. You have Burger fanboys and Pizza fanboys.

PS3 vs. 360 is like Domino's vs. Papa John's

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

This is a very good analogy. Though I never heard anyone talking shit about burgers when stuffed crust came out.

I'm just frustrated to see a battle which was stictly between the 360 and PS3 users suddenly somehow derailed into a battle between the Wii and HD.

I totally agree with #2. Reviewers have gone off the deepend of the Hardcore pool. Maybe they should get someone around 16 to review the casual games, since they are the ones who would get a grasp of it better (I have no clue what I'm saying) It just seems like these reviwers are way too old to rate games without excessive violence. Anything other than that, 1 1/2 page review. Unless its a 1st party effort.

If we lived in a world where you bought a $200 meal card that lasted 2 years, and gave you all you could eat of either pizza or burgers (but not the other), you have heard a lot of people talking shit.

And then the jersk who can afford both cards, who don't acknowledge that not everyone can afford one.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
