Forums - Gaming - VGC: Grand Theft Auto 4 Sells 2.5 million Units in the Americas on Day 1!!

I was unfortunate enough to screw up my launch prospects, and could not get into a line to obtain my copy of the game. So I handed over the task of getting a copy of the game to another the next day. The first store he visited was sold out of the 360 version. The second store was the same, but he was able to get two copies that had been reserved. The clerk said another shipment was supposed to come in that day, but I suspect bribery was involved. Twenty dollars left conveniently behind a game case on the shelf conveniently helps with such things.

What was interesting is that the each of these stores still had PS3 versions of the game, and of coarse the incredibly expensive special edition for the 360. I personally suspect that the first shipments were equal. For example there were two million copies of each available at launch. With a further million sitting in reserve for each console to resupply the stock.

This could easily explain the disparity. The 360 moved more of a limited volume while the PS3 did not tax its own volume. Think of it this way if 75% of the 360 stock sold on the first day its obvious how many stores would run out since stores are not hit evenly. While the PS3 moved through 50% of its stock on the first day its easy to see how most stores would not run out, or a higher percentage of stores did not run out.

The information we are lacking is the shipments. Were the shipments equal its easy to see how the 360 may be blocked for reaching true attach rates, because consumers were being turned away without purchasing the game. Had my friend not gotten the game through back channels we two might have had to wait a couple more days to get our copies.

I think the greatest anecdotal evidence for this is that I haven't heard of anyone actually trying to purchase the PS3 version striking out. While I have heard that a number of 360 owners have similar stories to mine. Having no luck, or having to go the extra mile to get a copy. Has anyone on these forums who wanted the PS3 version actually had any difficulty?
I can't give you exact numbers, but our store recieved substantially more copies of the 360 version of the game. We sold 62 copies of the 360 version and 51 copies of the ps3 version at the midnight launch, and I'd say we had about 75-100 copies of the 360 version left over afterwards, and maybe 50-70 copies of the ps3 version. The unit numbers may be off, but the stacks were roughly 1.5:1.

The Gamestop I went to said no GS in the area had any copies. I had to pick mine up at Target. Got the 4th to last copy for the 360.

Perhaps a sign that the local economy has yet to fully recover perhaps? When I purchased Halo 3 on launch night I purchased it in a town of less then fifteen thousand residents, and well over a hundred copies were sold. Just saying those sales sound pretty soft.

Of course the PS3 is going to have healthy GTA4 numbers. Everyone who owns one is hungry for something to play.

QFT, caution, you probably be banned for trolling.

You're both trolling. Don't do it again.

The closest thing that could be said is that it's been a little while since the last major release for the PS3, but that's about it.

The funny thing is that all the latest major releases have been multiplatform.  Dark Sector, Rainbow 6: Vegas, Devil May Cry 4, Condemned 2, Army of Two, and Viking.  I can't think of any major titles that have been released that have been exclusive to one of the 2 HD consoles, except GT5 Prologue, which ironically, is on the PS3.

OT:  Very impressive numbers.  I picked up GTA 4 for the PS3 yesterday from Circuit City.  They had 3 copies left after I bought a copy, and the guy behind me bought one.  I didn't see any XBox360 copies (probably sold out).  They had about 3 XBox360 SE copies, and about 6 PS3 SE copies.

Bad news for both systems, I think I've had enough of GTA. I gave it to my son, after Vlad's 2nd mission. GTA withdrawl is starting to kick in, nothing new except online play. It will sell well on PS3, because they have nothing else to play. I on the other hand will tune-up on Gears so I'll be ready for part 2. GTA 4 was scored too high (an 8.5 to 9 imho not a 10). Its not a shoe in for game of the year.

We sold over 100 on launch night.  113 to be exact.  And our store is two blocks away from a mall that contains both a GameStop and an EB Games.

wow!! that's really huge numbers!!

I guess total worldwide sales would of been over 4 million for the first day of GTA IV.

Ummmm, welcome to the forums.  Glad to see you have an unbiased opinion about all the consoles.

Like it or not (and I am definitely not one who champions the GTA franchise although I will probably buy GTA4), GTA is arguably the biggest name in gaming after Mario, and it manages to sell more units than even the Mario proper games.  GTA is here to stay, which the evidence of selling 2.5 million units in AMERICA ALONE will more than sufficiently attest to.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

Great sales figures but did the media hype sell this game or was it because it's a great game?
