Follow the marketing to the inexorable conclusion. Watch any commercial for the Wii. Read any paper advertisement for the system. Look at exactly what kind of games Nintendo is developing for their system. Notice anything contrary to the status quo. Look for it lets forget the word casual for a moment. Any other words spring to mind perhaps family friendly.

The Wii markets itself as a family activity. Yes the Nintendo loyalists know the console has a few complex titles, but ask Soccer mom and Nascar dad what the Wii is about. They will tell you its a videogame console you can play with your children. Parker Brothers recently ran the same kind of campaign. Insinuate that using their products will bring your family closer together, and parents will buy it in a heart beat.

The Wii is marketed as a family activity by Nintendo not as a gaming console. Yes developers will try to bilk this market, but it really is the house built on the shifting sands. How long will these owners actually stick with their new regiment, and what happens if they bore and go onto another abomination. So I doubt you will ever see developers go for a full scale abandonment. Those that would hang back can avoid getting crushed in a collapse. They know hardcore and core fans are there to stay.

This is largely baseless.

For example, the Xbox 360 is typically lauded as a console for hardcore gamers. Games on this console are typically selling significantly better than they did on the Xbox, despite currently having a lower install base. Halo 3 will end up significantly higher than Halo 2, CoD 4 and Assassin's Creed have been huge, Oblivion did fantastic early in the system's life, Mass Effect will sell well over 2m when all is said and done. The list goes on and on.

There has undoubtedly been a huge increase in the success of casual games, most of this is attributed to the success of the DS. On the Wii most of the truly successful games have been more traditional, with SMG, SMBB and Mario Kart leading the way. Even on the Wii, traditional games are not dying - although casual games are certainly playing a larger role in that consoles success.

Ultimately this just seems like another attempt to discount GTA IV's success.

I've got to agree with you there. People are so fixated with saying the 360 is dying that they don't actually look at the software sales and see just how much better its doing then last gen.
