Currently playing: Civ 6

Popularity does not equals quality; the wii is the new pet rock. The wii is full of mediocre games, god, most wii games feel like duck hunt from the NES, but since masses are controlled by emotions and not by reason the wii is popular, everyone is doing what the others are doing, is Britney over Mozart, yeah Britney is a better singer than Ella Fitzgerald. Third party games don’t sell because they don’t know what to do with the stupid control (maybe if porn games where allowed they would). I don’t get the why i keep reading… "better graphic does not means a better games", but i don’t see people writing "bad graphics does not means better games either". Please someone show me a deep compelling game for the wii that could only be made on the wii and needed bad graphics to be good and the controller made it unique and the gameplay  could not be replicated with a computer mouse. I don’t see how come the wii is innovating when every wii game is made for kids, people with no time to play and require no ability at all. The wii is taking us backwards, is the button masher (control shaker) heaven. Wii games could be flash based games.

But once again, there are more stupid people than anything in the world and the wii numbers are the proof of that.

i know many will say am wrong because the majority of people think the wii is the grates console ever, to those people i say

EPPUR' SI MUOVE (and yet it moves)

I didn't read the whole OP, but I will say this, if the Wii is not competing with (the others of) this generation of consoles then why are they not selling better, sure they are doing better each than the GC and Xbox, but if they are the only ones of the latest generation shouldn't they (PS3+360) be comparable in sales to all three of last generations consoles?

Also I see a lot of similarities with the Wii and DS, so is the DS in the same boat as Wii, and is it in fact competing with the GBA instead of the PSP.

That's because few people are stupid enough to say such a nonsensical thing, compared to the insightful first sentence.

Are you one of those that would say such a stupid thing in an argument? Oh wait...

Wii Sports.

You were living in a cave all this time?

I guess your next move will be to ask me to explain why what you call "bad graphics" was necessary for Wii Sports success.

Hey, Radha....your points also work when remove Wii and replace it with PS2. Care to revise your angst ridden post now?

There are several different ways of classifying competition, here is my non-exhaustive list:

  • Competition for developers: All living systems are in direct competition for developer resources; although you can have multiplatform games, it is fair to say that a person who is working on a Wii game can not be working on a PS3 or XBox 360 game at the same time therefore the Wii is in direct competition with the PS3 and XBox 360.
  • Competition for consumers: People will (typically) only buy one product within a certain class (home consoles for example) within a reasonable timeframe; this means that someone who buys a Wii today is probably not going to buy a PS3 or XBox 360 for several years, and thus the Wii is in direct competition with the PS3 and XBox 360.
  • Competition for mindshare: Most people tend to focus on one product in a given market; they pay attention to the iPod not the Zune as an example. What this means is that the attention being paid to the Wii effectively prevents attention from being paid towards the PS3 or XBox 360, and thus the Wii is in direct competition with the PS3 and XBox 360.
  • Competition for retail space: it is amazingly difficult to sell games and accessories in a store if the store doesn't devote shelf space towards those games and accessories. The more space that is devoted to the Wii the less space that can be devoted towards the PS3 and XBox 360, and thus the Wii is in direct competition with the PS3 and XBox 360.

The only area where it can be argued that the Wii is not in direct competition with the PS3 and XBox 360 is in the technical performance arguments that show up on webforums and have no impact on sales or third party support.

you can all laugh about it, but the Wii is not in 'direct' competition like all the consoles before this gen have always been in direct competition with each other, of course it's IN competition, but not directly anymore... that's not hating or denial and it's not positive or negative, it's being realistic..
