Forums - Gaming - Do you expect the Wii to end up being THE JRPG console this gen?

No, PS3 will be the main platform in the end. I'll never consider the WII to be a serious platform for serious and most of all "good" produced RPG games unless its Nintendo themselves creating it.

Exactly.  The reason no good JRPG's came to the PS2 is because it was seriously underpowered.

Wait, what?

Seriously Onna.  There is just no justification for making any big JRPG's PS3 exclusive.  The userbase just isn't there.  In fact, even within that userbase there doesn't seem to be any real love for JRPG's.  No matter how much you want it to be the case, developers and publishers cannot simply ignore the Wii's humungous lead, just as they haven't been able to ignore Microsoft's moneyhatting.

In my brain it goes like this..

JRPGs made for the taste of the western world:

1. Xbox 360
2. PlayStation 3
3. Wii

Comment: Good that Nintendo gamers often likes Japanese type of games, but will I be wrong about PS3 and 360?

Large JRPGs that are popular in both Japan and the rest of the world:

1. PlayStation 3
2. Wii
3. Xbox 360

Comment: Close fight between Wii and 360, will I be proved wrong by time?

Medium size JRPGs that are popular in Both Japan and the rest of the world:

1. Wii
2. PlayStation 3
3. Xbox 360

Comment: Close fight between PS3 and 360, will I be proved wrong by time?

JRPGs that has a large base in Japan, but small in the rest of the world or is Japan exclusive:

1. Wii
2. PlayStation 3
3. Xbox 360

Comment: I think Wii will rule big here, but I could be wrong?

3 points for first place, 1 for last and that will make:

1. Wii - 9 points
2. PS3 - 9 points
3. 360 - 6 points

Even if I'm right about the categories I made does not have to make me right about sales. But in the end I think the fight will be between Wii and PS3 with Wii maybe winning only because of many low budget RPGs for Wii. I don't think PS3 could come third in any way, but it might fight with 360 on the high budget ones.

Do I even know what I write about? :P
Am I right about JRPGs being made for mostly western taste? Because that would be why Microsoft forks up money for JRPGs.

We'll just have to wait until Atlus does it's thing, so far they've been progressing to Wii development - but Broque was only meh in completion.

The story was there though... as wierd and not there as it was.

I'm Unamerica and you can too.

The Hunt Begins 4/20/2010 =D

Wii will gain at least respectable JPRG support, just by its hardware sales alone. It was suggested that developers wanted to have extreme graphics to tell the story better and so on.

But in the real world pragmatism >>> ideology. If it's extremely profitable and low-risk to shoot for the ideals, they'd do it. But since the PS3 is tanking, it makes more sense to be pragmatic and provide more and more support to whatever's dominating the market (in this case the Wii).

Otherwise, shareholders will be angry that the profits aren't as high, resulting in lower dividends and such.

If we go by that logic, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts and Star Ocean would be on the PS3 and Suikoden and Tales would be on the Wii

Final Fantasy main games yes, but Wii might still see some of them. Kingdom Hearts game might come to Wii, I think. Both Xbox 360 and Wii will see Tales games.

What does the wii-mote really add to a jRPG. The PS3 adds the ability to fill the game with the amazing CG sequences, though the ones on PS2 weren't too bad (FF XII final dog fight was awesome!!!!)
Anyway, I think that there will be a considerable number of jRPGs on PS360 as well

Very little yet there are some advantages, but what console sells the most in japan? The only advantage the hd consoles have over the wii in CG is the higher resolutions, but how many people have hd tvs?"

A lot in Japan. More then the USA i believe. They've had HD content way longer then the US...

of course that hasn't helped the PS3's sales... or maybe it has. Either way it's a non issue.

I still don't get why people would want FF on the Wii.  All Final Fantasy has left is it's visuals.

Thanks Viper. So we can have JRPGs, ERPGs, ARPGs, GRPGs and so on.

Is it too much to ask what is the gameplay elements that differentiates JRPGs from other RPGs?

No... really just JRPGs, KRPGs, and WRPGs (Japanese, Korean, Western).

There are also type acronyms too such as ARPGs, TRPGs, SRPGs..etc. (Action, Tactical, Strategy if you didn't know).

What is the difference between tactical , and strategy?

None AFAIK.

Tactical is what Wikipedia uses.

Strategy is what the rest of the world uses.

I thought Tactical RPGs were ones that were like Heroes Might & Magic... where you build units but they also have RPG features. Eh maybe not.

Not that it matters.  War games are getting more and more RPG like so soon War games will technically be SRPGs or TRGs.  Or maybe also WRPGS.  or WRRPGS.
