Which one?  The 2025 not quite an Xbox or the 2027 Xbox handheld?

Would you buy either? Neither? One but not the other?

The 2027 I hope will play my current library of Xbox games.  If that's the case, I'd go with that one.  This years Asus is not going to do that.

If it had physical games and actual exclusives yes but given it will be just another PC handheld with an Xbox logo. What's the point? What makes it so special over a Deck or Ally?

If it can play Xbox console games natively, including BC titles, this would be something current PC handhelds don't offer.

That would require them to sort out the emulation on their end, and even then, you'd have to allow for users to tweak for added performance (not everyone wants to play 30fps for an older game when they know it can safely be capped at 60), and then there's playing at the lower res without any modding to improve the textures.

Again these are things the other PC handhelds could do. So just being able to play the bare minimum, but being capped at past FPS rates on older consoles, but on a newer handheld doesn't make sense (especially if it doesn't support modding/tweaking abilities).

If it doesn't support what I've suggested, like none of it at all, then I don't see that being the ultimate trump card against everything the Deck can do (which also features it's own Steam workshop support on top of being able to mod/tweak the deck and games in general).

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

I would buy it, if it's a better version of the steam deck, freedom and all. Otherwise it's a no from me dog.

I have never visited the Xbox brand with my wallet. Played a few things with friends on the original and the 360. Back then it was clear to me what Xbox stood for. Nowadays I do not really know anymore what Xbox is. It is a console brand, but it is also a dedicated service, and it is a non-dedicated service, and a publisher and a way to play games on other services.

It seems the Xbox handhelds are just going to be handheld PC's. At that point what is going to entice me to get that over the many others that are available?

I feel like the partner device this year is just going to be an ROG Ally with an Xbox badge. So while I'm not going to say I definitely won't buy an Xbox handheld it isn't going to draw me in any more than any of the other PC Handhelds unless it has preferable price and performance. The Xbox badge on it means nothing to me.

They would also have to do a lot to make me want to run Windows over SteamOS on a handheld.

It would need to have a lot of compelling exclusive physical software for me to buy one. I'm going to get the Switch 2 because of Nintendo supporting exactly that, exclusives and physical media. Unfortunately the Xbox handheld will probably be a digital only gamepass machine which I'm not interested in at all. If I were to get an only digital device I'd much rather wait for the next steam deck.

Xbox OS will make or break this. The asus device feels like a testing ground for the real one

Probably not. My XBox is mainly for third party games, Might be nice to have some of those on the go, but not enough for me to spend 400+ bucks.

400$ ?

For a portable that needs to be much more powerful than a Switch 1... and likely above a Switch 2 in terms of hardware...

Where it's rumored to sell/run Steam Games on? (so they are dropping the "walled garden" and reliable income that comes from it)
(steam games -> no store cuts for them on 3rd party game sales -> won't sell hardware at a loss)

I think its optimistic to believe such a Handheld will be less than 600$.
(factoring in the Trump Tariffs on goods)

It will likely be more. Hence why I said 400+.
