PS5 vs PS4 Sales Comparison in Japan - January 2025

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020 in Japan, while the PlayStation 4 launched in February 2014. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

PS5 Vs. PS4 Japan:

January 2025 is the 51st month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 4 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 5 by 26,966 units.

In the last 12 months, the PS4 has outsold the PS5 by 0.62 million units. The PS5 is currently behind the PS4 by 0.29 million units.

The 51st month for the PS5 in Japan is January 2025, while for the PS4 it is April 2018. The PS5 has sold 6.52 million units, while the PS4 sold 6.80 million units during the same timeframe.

The PS4 crossed 7 million in month 53, 8 million in month 61, and 9 million in month 72. The PS4 has sold 9.68 million units to date. The PS5 is currently 3.16 million units behind the lifetime sales of the PS4 in Japan.

Xbox Series X|S vs Xbox 360 Sales Comparison in Japan - January 2025

This monthly series compares the aligned sales of the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox 360 in Japan, as well as looking at lifetime original Xbox sales and Xbox One sales.

The Xbox Series X|S launched in Japan in November 2020, while the Xbox 360 launched in Japan in December 2005. The original Xbox launched in Japan in February 2002 and the Xbox One in September 2014.

In the last 12 months, the Xbox 360 has outsold the Xbox Series X|S by 0.18 million units. The Xbox 360 is currently ahead by 0.60 million units.

The Xbox Series X|S has sold 0.67 million units in 51 months, while the Xbox 360 sold 1.26 million units. Month 51 for the Xbox Series X|S is January 2025 and for the Xbox 360 is February 2010.

Switch vs DS Sales Comparison in the US - January 2025

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo DS.

The DS launched in November 2004 in the US, while the Nintendo Switch launched in the US in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

Switch Vs. DS US:

January 2025 is the 95th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for. During the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Switch by 18,913 units when compared to the DS during the same timeframe.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the DS by 0.61 million units. The DS is ahead of the Switch by 4.57 million units.

The 95th month on sale for the Nintendo Switch is January 2025, while for the DS it is September 2012. The Switch has sold 47.58 million units, while the DS sold 52.15 million units during the same timeframe.

The Nintendo DS sold 53.80 million units lifetime. The Nintendo Switch is currently 6.22 million units behind the lifetime sales of the DS.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo DS.

The DS launched in November 2004 in North America, December 2004 in Japan, and March 2005 in Europe, while the Nintendo Switch launched worldwide in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

Switch Vs. DS Global:

January 2025 is the 95th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for. During the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Switch by 0.37 million units when compared to the DS during the same timeframe.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the DS by 7.02 million units. The DS is ahead of the Switch by 2.39 million units.

The 94th month on sale for the Nintendo Switch is January 2025, while for the DS it is September 2012. The Switch has sold 149.19 million units, while the DS sold 151.58 million units during the same timeframe.

The Nintendo DS sold 154.02 million units lifetime. The Nintendo Switch is currently 4.83 million units behind the lifetime sales of the DS.

In the last 12 months, the PS5 has grown its lead over the PS3 by 5.45 million units. The PlayStation 5 is currently ahead by 25.12 million units.

The PlayStation 5 has sold 72.97 million units in 51 months, while the PlayStation 3 sold 47.85 million units. Month 51 for the PlayStation 5 is January 2025 and for the PlayStation 3 is January 2011.

The PlayStation 3 did not reach current PlayStation 5 sales until month 74 when it had sold 73.46 million units.
