VGChartz Methodology: Hardware estimates are based on retail sampling and trends in individual countries, which are then extrapolated to represent the wider region. This typically allows us to produce figures that end up being within 10% of the actual totals.

This data is regularly compared against official shipment figures released by the console manufacturers and figures estimated by regional trackers with greater market coverage than ourselves. We then update our own estimates to bring them into line with those figures. This can result in frequent changes often within a short space of time, but we feel it's important to prioritise accuracy over consistency.

Note that our estimates are based on sell-through data (units sold to consumers). In almost all cases the figures released by console manufacturers are based on shipment data (sell-in), where as soon as a device has left the factory and entered the supply chain for delivery it is considered a sale. This is why there is always a difference between the companies’ figures (sell-in) and VGChartz estimates (sell-through), even after we’ve made adjustments. The one exception to that is when a console has been discontinued and the remaining stock has finally sold out – at that point the figures will match.

PS5 Tops 70M Lifetime - Worldwide Hardware Estimates for December 2024

The PlayStation 5 was the best-selling console worldwide with 3.42 million units sold for December 2024, according to VGChartz estimates. The PlayStation 5 has now sold an estimated 71.03 million units lifetime worldwide.

The Nintendo Switch sold an estimated 2.69 million units to bring its lifetime sales to 148.79 million units. The Xbox Series X|S sold 0.97 million units to bring their lifetime sales to 32.17 million units. The PlayStation 4 sold an estimated 5,163 units to bring its lifetime sales to 117.20 million units.

PS5 sales compared to the same month for the PS4 in 2017 are down by nearly 0.49 million units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same month for the Xbox One are down by nearly 1.53 million units. PS4 sold 3.91 million units for the month of December 2017 and Xbox One sales were at 2.50 million units.

PlayStation 5 sales compared to the same month a year ago are down by 306,486 (-8.2%). Xbox Series X|S sales are down by 881,070 units (-47.6%) and Nintendo Switch sales are down by 813,519 units (-23.2%). The PlayStation 4 is down by 23,077 units (-81.7%) year-over-year.

Looking at sales month-on-month, PlayStation 5 sales are up down by over 0.62 million units, Xbox Series X|S sales are up by nearly 0.22 million units, and Nintendo Switch sales are up by over 0.95 million units.

2024 year-to-date, the PlayStation 5 has sold an estimated 18.65 million units, the Nintendo Switch has sold 12.05 million units, and the Xbox Series X|S has sold 4.97 million units.

PS5 Best-Seller as Sales Drop Just 2% YoY - Europe Hardware Estimates for December 2024

The PlayStation 5 was the best-selling console in Europe with 1.18 million units sold for December 2024, according to VGChartz estimates. The PlayStation 5 has now sold an estimated 24.41 million units lifetime in Europe.

The Nintendo Switch sold an estimated 0.92 million units to bring its lifetime sales to 38.50 million units. The Xbox Series X|S sold 0.17 million units to bring their lifetime sales to 8.28 million units. The PlayStation 4 sold an estimated 1,975 units to bring its lifetime sales to 45.86 million units.

PS5 sales compared to the same month for the PS4 in 2017 are down by nearly 0.42 million units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same month for the Xbox One are down by nearly 0.39 million units. PS4 sold 1.59 million units for the month of December 2017 and Xbox One sales were at 0.56 million units.

PlayStation 5 sales compared to the same month a year ago are down by 24,316 (-2.0%). Xbox Series X|S sales are down by 154,727 units (-47.4%) and Nintendo Switch sales are down by 161,672 units (-15.0%). The PlayStation 4 is down by 8,598 units (-81.3%) year-over-year.

Looking at sales month-on-month, PlayStation 5 sales are down by over 0.78 million units, Xbox Series X|S sales are down by less than 4,000 units, and Nintendo Switch sales are up by over 0.36 million units.

2024 year-to-date, the PlayStation 5 has sold an estimated 6.78 million units, the Nintendo Switch has sold 3.34 million units, and the Xbox Series X|S has sold 1.07 million units.

PS5 Best-Seller, XS Sales Drop 48% YoY - Americas Hardware Estimates for December 2024

The PlayStation 5 was the best-selling console in the Americas (USA, Canada, & Latin America) with 1.62 million units sold for December 2024, according to VGChartz estimates. The PlayStation 5 has now sold an estimated 29.05 million units lifetime in the Americas.

The Nintendo Switch was the second best-selling console with an estimated 0.98 million units sold to bring lifetime sales to 56.18 million units. The Xbox Series X|S came in third place with 0.71 million units sold to bring its lifetime sales to 19.60 million units. The PlayStation 4 sold an estimated 2,437 units to bring its lifetime sales to 41.55 million units.

PS5 sales compared to the same month for the PS4 in 2017 are up by over 0.34 million units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same month for the Xbox One are down by over 0.81 million units. PS4 sold 1.28 million units for the month of December 2017 and Xbox One sales were at 1.52 million units.

PlayStation 5 sales compared to the same month a year ago are down by 188,9661 (-10.4%). Xbox Series X|S sales are down by 650,798 units (-48.0%) and Nintendo Switch sales are down by 561,241 units (-36.4%). The PlayStation 4 is down by 6,370 units (-72.3%) year-over-year.

Looking at sales month-on-month, PlayStation 5 sales are up by nearly 175,000 units, Xbox Series X|S sales are up by over 204,000 units, and Nintendo Switch sales are up by over 275,000 units.

For 2024 total sales, the PlayStation 5 has sold an estimated 6.99 million units, the Nintendo Switch has sold 3.84 million units, and the Xbox Series X|S has sold 3.26 million units.

Switch Tops 35M Lifetime - Japan Hardware Estimates for December 2024

The Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console in Japan with 470,299 units sold for December 2024, according to VGChartz estimates. The Nintendo Switch has now sold an estimated 35.06 million units lifetime in Japan.

The PlayStation 5 sold an estimated 170,442 units to bring its lifetime sales to 6.47 million units. The Xbox Series X|S sold 10,607 units to bring their lifetime sales to 0.66 million units. The PlayStation 4 sold an estimated 226 units to bring its lifetime sales to 9.68 million units.

PS5 sales compared to the same month for the PS4 in 2017 are down by nearly 126,000 units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same month for the Xbox One are up by over 6,000 units. PS4 sold 296,036 units for the month of December 2017 and Xbox One sales were at 4,513 units.

Nintendo Switch sales compared to the same month a year ago are up by 34,901 units (8.0%). PlayStation 5 sales are down by 41,963 (-19.8%) and Xbox Series X|S sales are up by 3,242 units (44.0%). The PlayStation 4 is down by 6,379 units (-96.6%) year-over-year.

Looking at sales month-on-month, Nintendo Switch sales are up over 183,000 units, the PlayStation 5 sales are down by over 5,000 units, and Xbox Series X|S sales are down by nearly 2,000 units.

2024 year-to-date, the Nintendo Switch has sold an estimated 3.22 million units, the PlayStation 5 has sold 1.50 million units, and the Xbox Series X|S has sold 0.12 million units.
