Impressive is not exactly the term I would use to describe that video. Generic would probably be the best I could supply. The graphics are a mixed bag, and will probably result in more frustration then joy. The controls look to be painfully restricted, and unimaginative, and finally the level design seems to be a recipe for slow witted strategy.
I can easily see players being frustrated by the visual distortions. Blurred zooms, heat vision, and that veining effect are probably not the way to make players happy. They are a recipe for pissing players off. The environments do not seem to be particularly inspired, and some effects seem embarrassingly primitive. Even on the high definition video some of the weapons animations looked to be almost a decade out of date.
The controls look needlessly restrictive from what I saw in both videos. I gather that there is no jumping, crouching, going prone, or even an option to run. Thats just not acceptable the plain of battle almost feels two dimensional. The possibilities are so limited it almost seems that it would be painful to play. The weapons usage doesn't even seem inspired killing players with throwing knives. I swear I have seen that clubbing before, and for the love of all that is holy starting weapons based on faction. Thats a recipe for quitters unless you give players the choice of faction which will basically make things worse.
The environments are just not impressive they hardly seem exploitable, and the formula would work better in constrictive corridor based gaming. Where combat is fast, furious, and unexpected. The levels are too open, and even less forgivable this game looks to be screaming for a strafing mechanic. Face to face combat should give rise to more shoot and scoot, or more spray and pray. Rather then fun face first into a shooting and clubbing.
I really can see the genealogy of Goldeneye in this title, but it seems that they are using the good elements in a very bad way. They are not going to recapture that experience, and without that its a mediocre first person shooter. You want to be Goldeneye that is good. You want to be Halo that is good too. However you can't be both, because all you will get for your trouble is a retarded bastard child.
I really wonder who thought putting ladders on a multiplayer map in a exposed position was a brilliant idea? That is like a blasphemy of the highest order. You never just hang a player up like that. Nobody will dare go near the thing its utter helplessness. Worse it gives a jerk the opportunity to really irritate his fellow players.
