PS5 vs PS4 Sales Comparison in Japan - August 2024

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020 in Japan, while the PlayStation 4 launched in February 2014. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

PS5 Vs. PS4 Japan:

Gap change over last 12 months: 232,566 - PS4

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 5,733,695

August 2024 is the 46th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 5 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 4 by 947 units.

In the last 12 months, the PS4 has outsold the PS5 by 232,566 units. The PS5 is currently ahead by 285,654 units.

The 46th month for the PS5 in Japan is August 2024, while for the PS4 it is November 2017. The PS5 has sold 6.02 million units, while the PS4 sold 5.73 million units during the same timeframe. The PS4 sold current PS5 sales in month 47.

The PS4 crossed 6 million in month 47, 7 million in month 53, and 8 million in month 61. The PS4 has sold 9.68 million units to date. The PS5 is currently 3.66 million units behind the lifetime sales of the PS4 in Japan.

Xbox Series X|S vs Xbox 360 Sales Comparison in Japan - August 2024

This monthly series compares the aligned sales of the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox 360 in Japan, as well as looking at lifetime original Xbox sales and Xbox One sales.

The Xbox Series X|S launched in Japan in November 2020, while the Xbox 360 launched in Japan in December 2005. The original Xbox launched in Japan in February 2002 and the Xbox One in September 2014.

August 2024 is the 46th month the Xbox Series X|S has been available for in Japan. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Xbox 360 when compared to the aligned launch of the Xbox Series X|S by 19,766 units.

In the last 12 months, the Xbox 360 has outsold the Xbox Series X|S by 278,676 units. The Xbox 360 is currently ahead by 536,014 units.

The Xbox Series X|S has sold 0.63 million units in 46 months, while the Xbox 360 sold 1.16 million units. Month 46 for the Xbox Series X|S is August 2024 and for the Xbox 360 is September 2009.

The Xbox 360 crossed 1.2 million units in month 49 and 1.5 million units in month 67. The Xbox 360 sold 1.66 million units lifetime. The Xbox Series X|S is 1.03 million units behind lifetime Xbox 360 sales.

In the last 12 months, the PS4 has outsold the PS5 by 868,837 units. The PS5 is currently behind the PS4 by 5.50 million units.

The PS5 has sold 20.29 million units in 46 months, while the PS4 sold 25.79 million units. Month 46 for the PS5 is August 2024 and for the PS4 is August 2017.

The PS4 crossed 30 million in month 51 and 40 million in month 72. The PS4 has sold 45.86 million units to date in Europe. The PS5 is 25.57 million units behind lifetime PS4 sales in Europe.

In the last 12 months, the Xbox One has outsold the Xbox Series X|S by 0.90 million units. The Xbox Series X|S is currently behind the Xbox One by 091 million units.

The Xbox Series X|S has sold 7.92 million units in 46 months, while the Xbox One sold 8.84 million units. Month 46 for the Xbox Series X|S is August 2024 and for the Xbox One is August 2017.

The Xbox One crossed 10 million units sold in Europe in month 50, 12 million in month 62, and 14 million in month 76. The Xbox One sold 14.86 million units lifetime in Europe. The Xbox Series X|S is 6.94 million units behind lifetime Xbox One sales in Europe.

In the last 12 months, the PlayStation 5 has outsold Xbox Series X|S by 2.32 million units. The PlayStation 5 is currently ahead by 6.23 million units.

The PlayStation 5 has sold 21.37 million units in the US in 46 months, while the Xbox Series X|S sold 15.01 million units. The PlayStation 5 has a 58.5 percent marketshare (+1.2% year-over-year), compared to 41.5 percent for the Xbox Series X|S (-1.2% year-over-year).

The PlayStation 5 is currently 1.57 million units ahead the PlayStation 4 in the US when you align launches, while the Xbox Series X|S is behind the Xbox One by 2.03 million.

The PS5 has sold 60.91 million units in 46 months, while the PS4 sold 63.53 million units. Month 46 for the PS5 is August 2024 and for the PS4 is August 2017.

The PS4 crossed 70 million in month 50, 80 million in month 56, and 90 million in month 62. The PS4 has sold 117.19 million units to date. The PS5 is 56.28 million units behind lifetime PS4 sales.

The Xbox Series X|S launched in November 2020, while the Xbox One launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

August 2024 is the 46th month the Xbox Series X|S has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Xbox One when compared to the aligned launch of the Xbox Series X|S by 70,109 units.

In the last 12 months, the Xbox One has outsold the Xbox Series X|S by 2.70 million units. The Xbox Series X|S is currently behind the Xbox One by 2.81 million units.

The Xbox Series X|S has sold 29.88 million units in 46 months, while the Xbox One sold 32.69 million units. Month 46 for the Xbox Series X|S is August 2024 and for the Xbox One is August 2017.

The Xbox One crossed 40 million in month 53, 45 million in month 62, and 50 million in month 71. The Xbox One has sold 57.96 million units lifetime. The Xbox Series X|S is 28.08 million units behind lifetime Xbox One sales.

BTW I decided to drop the Xbox Series X|S vs Xbox 360 worldwide comparison as that comparison is looking impossible at this point. IF the Xbox Series X|S outsells the Xbox One worldwide I will bring it back.

I might add a new comparison with the Switch vs the DS in the US if people are interested. Launch aligned the Switch is ~6M behind the DS in the US and ~8M behind lifetime DS sales in the US.
